Random country generator, with flag and capital.

A country randomizer for geography practice, travel ideas and games. Press the button for a country from the 193 UN member states, in any continent or all of them, with its flag, capital, continent and a dated population figure. Or switch to the quiz and guess the country from its flag, the capital from the country, or the country from its capital. The list, its sources and the dates are on this page. It is a list, not a political statement.

Press New country to get one. Pick a continent on the right first if you like.

Keys, when you are not typing in a box: Space or N for the next one, 1 to 4 to answer a quiz question and C to copy.

Guide

How to use a country randomizer, and the quiz.

A country randomizer picks a country for you, for a geography lesson, a trivia night, a travel idea or a game of pin the map. This one draws from the 193 member states of the United Nations and shows each country's flag, capital, continent and population. A second mode turns the same list into a quiz about flags and capitals. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use the random country generator

  1. Choose a Continent on the right, or leave it on Any continent.
  2. Choose How many countries you want at once, from 1 to 10.
  3. Tick Hide the capital and population until I tap if you want to guess first. Then each card shows Show the capital and Show the population buttons.
  4. Press New country, or press Space. The first country is shown large with its flag.
  5. Press Copy to copy the country, its capital, continent and population as text.

Which countries are on the list

The list is the 193 member states on the United Nations Member States page, read on 18 Oct 2026. The two states that have observer status at the UN are not on it, and neither are territories and other places that are not UN members. Leaving them out is not a view on any of them. It keeps the list to one stated source, so the page does not have to choose a capital or a status for any place. If you want a different list, this page is not it.

Names are the short form people use, with the full UN name shown on the card where it differs, such as Russian Federation for Russia. By continent, the list has 54 in Africa, 47 in Asia, 43 in Europe, 23 in North America, 14 in Oceania and 12 in South America. That adds up to 193.

Capitals are written the way the World Bank lists them, with accents added and a few spellings set right, such as Kyiv and Tirana. The World Bank lists no capital for Israel, so this page shows none for it and leaves it out of the capital questions. It does not fill the gap itself. Some countries have more than one capital city, for example one for the government and one for the parliament, and the list gives one name per country, so a quiz answer can differ from the one you were taught.

Continents follow the UN regions, which put a few countries that cross a boundary on one side: on that list Russia is in Europe and Türkiye is in Asia. The Americas are split into North America (including Central America and the Caribbean) and South America. Population is the World Bank estimate for 2025. World Bank data are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. These are estimates, so treat them as a guide.

The quiz

Switch to Quiz and choose a Question type: Flag to country, Country to capital, Capital to country, or Mixed. Choose how many Questions (10, 20 or no end) and how to answer: Four choices, or Typing. Press Start the quiz. With choices, click one or press 1 to 4. The wrong choices come from the same continent first, so the region never gives the answer away. The page shows the right answer after each question, then Next question moves on. At the end you see your score and the countries you missed.

When you type, case and accents do not matter, so bogota matches Bogotá. For a country you can also type its full UN name. Skip counts as a miss and moves on, and Restart the quiz starts again. Your best streak is kept in this browser.

No repeats until the list is used up

Countries are dealt from a shuffled deck made with your browser's secure random numbers, so none comes up twice until every country that matches your continent has been shown. The page then tells you and shuffles again.

Flags and your device

Flags are emoji. Phones and Macs draw them. Some Windows PCs show two letters instead of a flag. The page tests for this when it loads. If it finds no flags, it shows the two-letter country code on each card and switches off the flag questions.

Common problems

  • A capital looks different from the one I know. The list gives one capital per country, as the World Bank writes it. Some countries use more than one.
  • A country is missing. Only UN member states are on the list.
  • No flag shows. Your device may not draw flag emoji. The country code is shown instead.

Questions

Good to know.

How many countries are there?

193, the member states on the United Nations Member States page, read on 18 Oct 2026.

Why are some places not on the list?

Only UN member states are included, so the page follows one stated list. That is not a political statement about any place.

Where do the capitals come from?

From the World Bank country list, read on 18 Oct 2026. Where it lists no capital, the page shows none.

How recent is the population?

It is the World Bank estimate for 2025, and the card shows the year.

Which continent is a country in if it crosses two?

The one the UN regions give it. On that list Russia is in Europe and Türkiye is in Asia.

Can I type my answer in the quiz?

Yes. Choose Typing under Answer by. Case and accents do not matter.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

It is free, with no account and no limit.

Do I get the same country twice?

Not until every country that matches your continent has come up. Then the list is shuffled again.
