The best free Screen Studio alternative for Mac

Screen Studio makes beautiful recordings, but it costs money every month. Here is what else gives you auto zoom and a smooth cursor, what each one costs, and which to pick.

Short answer: if you want Screen Studio's look on a Mac without a subscription, use MotionShine. It zooms in on your clicks, smooths your cursor, adds a background, and exports without a watermark for free. If you need Windows or Linux too, look at Cap. If you mainly share links with a team, look at Tella.

Prices and features below come from each maker's own website, checked on 14 October 2026. Prices change, so check before you buy.

Why people look for a Screen Studio alternative

Screen Studio is a lovely app. It records your screen, then zooms in on what you clicked and turns a shaky mouse into a steady glide. Most people who look for something else have one of three reasons.

  • The price. Screen Studio lists two plans: $29 a month, or $9 a month billed yearly, which is $108 a year. There is no free plan: without one, you cannot export.
  • It is Mac only. Its own page says it "only supports macOS" and that there are no near-future plans for Windows.
  • The editor is light. You get one background music track and no way to put text, pictures or a logo on the video.

What to look for in an alternative

Not every screen recorder is a Screen Studio alternative. A plain recorder like QuickTime gives you a flat video of your whole screen. The things that make Screen Studio videos look finished are these:

  1. Auto zoom on clicks. The video moves in on what you clicked, so viewers see the button, not a tiny dot on a big screen.
  2. A smooth cursor. Jumpy mouse moves become one calm line.
  3. Click effects and motion blur. Each click is easy to spot, and fast moves look like film instead of jumping.
  4. A background and padding. The recording sits on a colour or gradient with rounded corners instead of filling the frame edge to edge.
  5. A real editor. Trim, change a zoom, add text, music or captions without opening a second app.
  6. Fair export rules. No watermark, and a price you can live with.

1. MotionShine: the free one made for this

MotionShine is a Mac screen recorder with a full editor, built for the same job as Screen Studio: recordings that look edited without you editing them. Every click you make becomes a zoom, so the editor opens with the zooms and a smooth cursor already in place. Add click effects and motion blur, pick a background, then change any zoom on the timeline.

What you get for free is the whole app, with no time limit and no watermark. The only limit is export size: up to 720p at 30 fps. A paid licence unlocks 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 60 fps, and every paid plan is a one-time payment. During launch, Pro is $49 once (then $79), and Pro Forever, with lifetime updates on 3 Macs, is $99 once (then $149).

It also has a full editor, closer to CapCut than to a recorder, so you do not need a second app:

  • Text, pictures and logos on the video.
  • Music on separate lanes, as many tracks as you want.
  • A cursor you design: any colour, gradients, glow, 3D styles, or your own picture.
  • Captions made on your Mac, in more than 40 languages, without uploading your video.

Good for: anyone on a Mac who wants Screen Studio style videos without paying every month.

Weak point: Mac only (macOS 13 Ventura or later). Free exports stop at 720p.

2. Cap: free and open source, also on Windows

Cap is an open source recorder for Mac, Windows and Linux. Its Studio Mode records locally and has auto zoom from your clicks, a smooth cursor, click effects, motion blur and custom backgrounds. The editor puts text and music on their own lanes and makes captions on your computer. It also has an Instant Mode that uploads and gives you a share link, much like Loom.

The free plan is for personal use only. For client or company work you need a Desktop licence at $29 a year or $58 once. Cap's docs do not mention putting pictures or a logo on top of the video.

Good for: people who need Windows or Linux, or who want open source code.

Weak point: commercial use is paid, and picture or logo overlays are not mentioned.

3. FocuSee: auto zoom on Mac and Windows

FocuSee follows your clicks and typing with automatic zooms, adds click animations and motion blur, and runs on both Mac and Windows. Its editor covers trimming, speed, and text and shapes on top of the video. The free trial lets you export one video. After that it is a subscription: Standard is $49.99 a year or $19.99 a month for one computer. Advanced is $79.99 a year, or $199.99 once for a lifetime licence of version 2 on up to 5 computers. Some AI features need extra credits.

Good for: Windows users who want Screen Studio style zooms.

Weak point: you pay before you can export more than one video.

Tella records on Mac, Windows and in Chrome. On Mac recordings it adds auto zoom from your clicks, a smooth cursor, click effects and motion blur, and its editor has text, logo overlays and captions. It is built around hosting and sharing: you send a link instead of a file. Pro is $13 per user a month billed yearly, or $26 month to month. There is a 7-day trial and no free plan.

Good for: teams sending product updates and walkthroughs as links.

Weak point: a cost per person, every month.

5. OBS Studio: free, but no zoom

OBS Studio is free and open source, and very good at recording and live streaming. It does not zoom on clicks or smooth the cursor, so the result looks like a raw recording. You would need a second app to edit it.

Good for: streaming, gaming and long recordings where polish does not matter.

Weak point: no auto zoom, no editor, and a steep first hour.

Which one should you pick?

  • You are on a Mac and want it free: MotionShine.
  • You need Windows or Linux: Cap, or FocuSee if you are happy to pay for it.
  • Your team shares videos as links all day: Tella.
  • You stream or record games: OBS Studio.
  • You already pay for Screen Studio and like it: keep it. It is a good app.

How to switch from Screen Studio to MotionShine

  1. Download MotionShine with your email. The free licence key arrives in the same email.
  2. Open it from Applications, paste the key, and allow Screen Recording when macOS asks.
  3. Record the whole display, one window or an area. Click where you want attention: every click becomes a zoom.
  4. The editor opens with the zooms and smooth cursor in place. Change any zoom, pick a background and a cursor style, then export as MP4 or GIF.

Your Screen Studio projects will not open in MotionShine, but any video file you exported will. The docs walk through each step with pictures.
