Guide
How many fluid ounces are in a tablespoon, counted both ways.
There are 0.5 fluid ounces in a US tablespoon. Put the other way, 1 US fluid ounce holds 2 tablespoons and 6 teaspoons. So 4 tablespoons is 2 fl oz, 8 is 4 fl oz and 16 is 8 fl oz, a cup. If you are asking how many tablespoons are in an ounce, the answer is 2. The key is the word fluid. A fluid ounce is a volume, and an ounce on a scale is something else.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the US fluid ounces (fl oz) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 1/2 works. To start from tablespoons, type in the second box.
- The big result shows US tablespoons (tbsp). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under the result show the same amount in other units.
- Type in the second box, or press ⇄, to go the other way.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
- Under the tables, Convert a list takes many amounts at once. Paste one per line, for example a column from a spreadsheet, and read them all in the units shown above. Copy results copies the table, and the swap button turns the list around.
- The line called Kitchen measure rounds a cup, spoon, fluid ounce, pint, quart or gallon result to a fraction you can measure, and says how far off it is. Pick 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8 or 1/16 beside it.
The small kitchen measures in a row
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists the tablespoon as 3 teaspoons exactly, 4 fluid drams and half a fluid ounce exactly, and the teaspoon as a third of a tablespoon. It also notes that tablespoon and teaspoon are imprecise units, so it rounds their metric values to the nearest milliliter, 15 and 5. Checked 26 Oct 2026. Here are the steps from the teaspoon up to the cup.
| Measure | In teaspoons | In tablespoons | In US fluid ounces | In milliliters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon | 1 | 0.33333 | 0.16667 | 4.9289 |
| 1 tablespoon | 3 | 1 | 0.5 | 14.787 |
| 1 fluid ounce | 6 | 2 | 1 | 29.574 |
| 1/4 cup | 12 | 4 | 2 | 59.147 |
| 1/2 cup | 24 | 8 | 4 | 118.29 |
| 1 cup | 48 | 16 | 8 | 236.59 |
Fluid drams: the middle step
Old pharmacy and bar measures survive in the Handbook. A tablespoon is 4 fluid drams and a fluid ounce is 8 fluid drams, which makes 2 tablespoons to the ounce, the same answer. A dram is rarely used now, but you may see it in a historic recipe. The count of 2 holds whichever way you reach it.
Worked examples
- How many tablespoons are in 3 fl oz? Type 3 and read 6 tablespoons.
- How many fluid ounces are in 5 tablespoons? 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 fl oz.
- A 1.5 fl oz pour. 3 tablespoons, or 9 teaspoons.
- An 8 fl oz cup. 16 tablespoons.
- The nutrition label ounce. It is 30 mL and a label tablespoon is 15 mL, so again 2 to the ounce.
Label, US and UK values
The label figures come from 21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii): a tablespoon is 15 mL and a fluid ounce is 30 mL. The exact US values are 14.78676 mL and 29.57353 mL. The UK fluid ounce is 28.41306 mL (NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8), so there are 1.9215 US tablespoons in a UK fluid ounce. The page is built for US recipes, so a UK or an old recipe may need a check against millilitres.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is the weight ounce. An ounce of weight of honey, salt and water take up different amounts of room, so the 2 tablespoons only hold for a fluid ounce. The second is the cutlery spoon, which is not a measure. The third is a heaped spoon, which holds more than a level one. The fourth is mixing the US ounce with the UK ounce.
