Tsp to oz converter, six teaspoons make one fluid ounce.

To convert teaspoons to ounces, divide the teaspoons by 6. A US teaspoon is a sixth of a US fluid ounce, so 6 tsp is 1 fl oz, 3 tsp is 0.5 fl oz and 1 tsp is 0.1667 fl oz. This is a volume sum. A fluid ounce measures space. If the recipe means ounces on a scale, that is a different unit, covered further down. The reverse is a multiplication: 2 fl oz is 12 tsp.

How to use the converter

Where the 6 comes from

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives a measuring tablespoon as 3 teaspoons exactly and as half a fluid ounce exactly, and a teaspoon as a third of a tablespoon, so a teaspoon is 1/6 of a fluid ounce. In millilitres that is 4.928922 mL. The Handbook adds that "tablespoon" and "teaspoon" are imprecise units, so their metric equivalents are rounded to 15 mL and 5 mL. Checked 26 Oct 2026.

US, label and UK sizes side by side

Three sets of numbers are in use. The exact US teaspoon is 4.928922 mL. US food labels round it to 5 mL and use 30 mL for the fluid ounce (21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii), read 26 Oct 2026). The UK fluid ounce is smaller than the US one, 28.41306 mL against 29.57353 mL (NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8), so a teaspoon is a bigger share of it.

Worked examples

• 12 tsp of extract. 12 ÷ 6 = 2 fl oz, or 59.147 mL.
• 2 tsp. 0.33333 fl oz. Round it to 1/3 oz.
• 9 tsp. 1.5 fl oz, which is 3 tablespoons.
• 1 1/2 tsp. Type 1 1/2 and read 0.25 fl oz.
• Ounces back to teaspoons. 4 fl oz × 6 = 24 tsp, which is 8 tablespoons or half a cup.

Teaspoons of weight: a different question

If a recipe says "1 oz" of something and you are measuring in teaspoons, the ounce may be a weight. A teaspoon of water weighs about 0.174 oz (4.93 g), because water is close to 1 g per mL. Salt, sugar and flour do not weigh the same per teaspoon, so there is no single answer. Use mL to grams with the density of the food, or weigh it. This page does only the volume sum.

A word of caution about medicine

This is a unit converter, not advice. A kitchen teaspoon varies from spoon to spoon, so for a liquid medicine use the dosing cup or syringe that came with it and follow the label.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is dividing by 8, which is the number of ounces in a cup, not teaspoons in an ounce. The second is mixing up tsp and tbsp (a small t and a capital T are easy to misread). A tablespoon is 3 teaspoons and a half ounce. The third is using the UK ounce for a US recipe. The fourth is thinking that 1 tsp is 5 mL exactly. For labels it is, but the exact US value is 4.9289 mL.
