To convert tablespoons to fluid ounces, divide the tablespoons by 2. A US tablespoon is half a US fluid ounce, so 2 tbsp is 1 fl oz, 4 tbsp is 2 fl oz and 16 tbsp is 8 fl oz, which is one cup. The sum is exact. To go back, multiply: 3 fl oz is 6 tbsp. This is a volume sum, so it applies to liquids and to anything you measure by the spoonful.

How to use the converter

Where the 2 comes from

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists a measuring tablespoon as 3 teaspoons, 15 milliliters, 4 fluid drams and half a fluid ounce exactly. It also says a measuring cup is 8 fluid ounces exactly, so 16 tablespoons fill a cup. Checked 26 Oct 2026. Because the half-ounce is the exact definition, a US tablespoon is 14.78676 mL, and the 15 mL figure is a round-off.

Worked examples

• A dressing with 6 tbsp of oil. 6 ÷ 2 = 3 fl oz, or 88.721 mL.
• 8 tbsp of milk. 4 fl oz, which is half a cup.
• 3 tbsp of lemon juice. 1.5 fl oz.
• 1 1/2 tbsp. Type 1 1/2 and read 0.75 fl oz.
• 5 fl oz back to tablespoons. Swap the boxes and type 5: 10 tbsp.

Scaling a recipe in tablespoons

The rule helps when you double or halve a recipe. If a sauce needs 3 tbsp, a double batch is 6 tbsp or 3 fl oz. A quarter batch is 3/4 tbsp, which is 2 1/4 tsp. Once a tablespoon count gets to 4, the next measure up is a quarter cup, and at 16 it is a full cup. The tool takes fractions, so you can type 3/4 and read 0.375 fl oz without turning it into a decimal first.

Label, US and UK values

US nutrition labels use 15 mL for a tablespoon and 30 mL for a fluid ounce (21 CFR 101.9(b)(5)(viii), read 26 Oct 2026), which also gives 2 tablespoons to the ounce. The UK fluid ounce is 28.41306 mL (NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8), so 1 UK fluid ounce is 1.9215 US tablespoons, close to 2 but a little under. For a small amount the difference is hard to notice. For a big batch, use millilitres.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is mixing the fluid ounce with the ounce of weight. A tablespoon of honey is far heavier than a tablespoon of oil, and a tablespoon is not 0.5 oz on a scale in general. The second is dividing by 3, which is the tsp sum. The third is using a table spoon from the cutlery drawer, which may hold more or less than a measuring spoon. The fourth is a metric spoon of another size. If a recipe's country uses a different tablespoon, work in mL.
