Guide

How to convert liters to cubic feet, for fridges, bags and tanks.

To convert liters to cubic feet, divide the liters by 28.316847. One cubic foot is 28.316847 liters, so 100 L is 3.5315 ft³ and 1 L is 0.035315 ft³. You can also multiply by 0.0353147. For the other direction, 1 ft³ × 28.3168 gives liters: an 18 cubic foot fridge holds 509.7 L. Cubic feet are sometimes written cu ft or ft3.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the amount in the Liters (L) box. A decimal such as 2.5 works.
  2. The big result shows Cubic feet (ft³). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
  3. The cards under the result show the same amount in other units.
  4. Type in the second box, or press ⇄, to go the other way.
  5. Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
  6. Under the tables, Convert a list takes many amounts at once. Paste one per line, for example a column from a spreadsheet, and read them all in the units shown above. Copy results copies the table, and the swap button turns the list around.

Where 28.3168 comes from

The foot is exactly 0.3048 meter (the international foot, used in NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C). A cubic foot is 0.3048³ cubic meters, which is 0.028316846592 m³. A liter is exactly 10-3 m³ (NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8). Divide the first by the second and a cubic foot is 28.316846592 L, an exact number with a long tail. The Handbook adds that a cubic foot holds 7.480519 US gallons. Checked 26 Oct 2026.

Worked examples

  • A 100 liter tank. 100 ÷ 28.3168 = 3.5315 ft³.
  • A 40 liter backpack. 1.413 ft³.
  • A 300 liter fridge. 10.59 cubic feet.
  • A 5 cubic foot freezer in liters. Swap the boxes: 141.58 L.
  • A US gallon. 0.13368 ft³.

Why the answer looks so small

A cubic foot is a big box, about 28 liters, so a number of liters turns into a much smaller number of cubic feet. A 1,000 liter tank is only 35.31 ft³. If an answer looks too small, check the direction: liters to cubic feet divides, and cubic feet to liters multiplies. A fridge or a cooler label that gives both is a good test: it should be near 28.3 times as many liters.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is using 30 or 28 as a rounded divisor: 28 gives a 1 percent error and 30 gives 6 percent. The second is mixing a cubic foot with a square foot or a linear foot. The third is mixing up cu ft with CFM, which is a flow rate in cubic feet per minute. The fourth is rounding the liters first. Use the figures above and round the last one.
