How to convert ounces to pounds, and what the decimal means.

To convert ounces to pounds, divide the ounces by 16. There are 16 ounces in a pound, so 1.5 lb is what you get from 24 oz, and 8 oz is 0.5 lb. If you would rather have whole pounds and leftover ounces, such as 3 lb 4 oz, the card called Pounds and ounces under the result shows it as you type.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the amount in the Ounces (oz) box. A decimal such as 2.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
  2. The big result shows Pounds (lb). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
  3. The cards under it give the same weight as pounds and ounces, in grams and in kilograms.
  4. Type in the Pounds box, or press the ⇄ button, to go from pounds back to ounces.
  5. Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.

Why it is 16

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists "16 ounces = 1 pound" for the avoirdupois system, the ordinary weights used for food, post and body weight. One ounce is therefore 1 ÷ 16 = 0.0625 lb exactly, and a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg in the same table. Checked 24 Oct 2026. No rounding is hidden in the tool: it works with exact fractions and rounds the last digit once.

Decimal pounds are not pounds and ounces

This is the mistake that costs the most. A result of 3.1 lb does not mean 3 lb 1 oz. The .1 is a tenth of a pound, which is 1.6 oz, so 3.1 lb is 3 lb 1.6 oz. In the same way 24 oz makes 1.5 lb equal to 1 lb 8 oz, not 1 lb 5 oz. When a scale or label shows "2 lb 4 oz", the 4 is ounces, and as a decimal that weight is 2.25 lb. Use the Pounds and ounces card when you need the mixed form, and the big number when you need a decimal for a spreadsheet or a formula.

Worked examples

  • 24 oz. 24 ÷ 16 = 1.5 lb, which is 1 lb 8 oz.
  • 7 oz. 7 ÷ 16 = 0.4375 lb. A short sum like this is why the Auto setting shows up to five decimals.
  • 52 oz. 52 ÷ 16 = 3.25 lb. The whole part is 3 pounds, and 52 − 48 = 4 oz left, so 3 lb 4 oz.
  • 100 oz. 100 ÷ 16 = 6.25 lb, or 6 lb 4 oz.
  • 250 oz. 250 ÷ 16 = 15.625 lb, or 15 lb 10 oz. In kilograms that is 7.087 kg.
  • Back the other way. 2.75 lb × 16 = 44 oz. Type 2.75 in the pounds box to see it.

Price per ounce to price per pound

Shop labels often give a price per ounce, while a bag is sold by the pound. Multiply the price per ounce by 16. At 0.35 per ounce, a pound costs 0.35 × 16 = 5.60. At 0.125 per ounce it is 2.00. To go the other way, divide the price per pound by 16: 0.500 per ounce for a price of 8.00 per pound. It is the same factor as the weight, just applied to money. This is arithmetic only, with no currency in mind.

Adding weights given in ounces

Add the ounces first and convert once. 14 oz + 11 oz + 9 oz = 34 oz, and 34 ÷ 16 = 2.125 lb, or 2 lb 2 oz. Converting each part to pounds first works too, but you pick up rounding errors, so keep ounces until the end.

Weight ounces, fluid ounces and troy ounces

This page is for weight ounces, the avoirdupois ounce of 28.349523125 g. A fluid ounce measures volume, and a pound of water, oil and honey all fill different spaces, so fluid ounces cannot be turned into pounds without knowing the liquid. A troy ounce, used for gold and silver, is a different weight again. The same Handbook table gives 480 grains for a troy ounce and 437.5 grains for an ordinary ounce, which makes the troy ounce about 9.7 percent heavier. For troy ounces use the card on Grams to ounces.

A way to do it in your head

Halve the ounces four times. 64 oz halves to 32, 16, 8, 4, so 64 oz is 4 lb. Or go by quarters: every 4 oz is a quarter pound, so 20 oz is five quarters, which is 1.25 lb. For a number that does not fit, divide by 16 and keep the remainder as ounces.
