Free tool

Protect a PDF, with a password.

Lock a PDF with a password before you email or share it, so only people who know the password can open it. It is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest PDF encryption, and you can also stop printing, copying text and editing. The file never leaves your computer.

The PDF is protected in your browser. The file and the password are never uploaded.

Questions

Good to know.

How strong is the protection?

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method PDF offers, supported by Adobe Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and most PDF apps. A long password of four or more random words is very hard to guess; a short one is not.

What if I forget the password?

It cannot be recovered, by this page or anyone else. Keep a copy of the original or note the password somewhere safe.

Do the print and copy limits really stop people?

Most PDF apps respect them, but they rely on the app: someone who can open the file can still take screenshots, and some tools ignore the limits. The open password is the real protection.

What is the owner password?

A second password that lifts the print, copy and edit limits in apps such as Acrobat. Leave it empty and a long random one is set, so the limits cannot be lifted by anyone.

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. Both stay in this tab. The encryption is done by qpdf (Apache 2.0 licence), running inside your browser.
