YouTube description generator, chapters included.

Fill in what the video is about, your timestamps, links and hashtags, and get a tidy description ready to paste into YouTube Studio. Chapters are checked against YouTube's rules as you type, so they actually show on the video. In Chrome with built-in AI, it can also write the opening lines for you.

    YouTube's chapter rules

    Three checks, or no chapters.

    01 / Start

    First at 00:00

The first timestamp in the list has to be 00:00, or YouTube shows no chapters at all.

    02 / Count

    At least three

Three or more timestamps, listed in order from the start of the video to the end.

    03 / Length

    Ten seconds each

Every chapter must last at least 10 seconds. The checker names any that are too short.

    Questions

    Good to know.

How long can a YouTube description be?

Up to 5,000 characters, according to YouTube's help page on video settings. The counter shows how many you have used.

    What should go first?

A short sentence that says what the video gives the viewer, with the words people search for. Only the first lines show before "more", so put chapters, links and hashtags after it.

Why do my chapters not show on YouTube?

Usually one of the three rules is broken: the first time is not 00:00, there are fewer than three, or a chapter is under 10 seconds. The checker on this page flags each one.

    Where do the hashtags go?

At the end. Of all the hashtags in a description, YouTube shows up to three by the title, and ignores all of them if there are more than 60.

    Can I edit the result?

Yes. Type straight into the description box. Once you do, changes in the form no longer replace it; press Undo my edits to go back to the form's version.
