How to convert a QuickTime recording to a GIF

QuickTime Player saves a .mov and has no GIF export. Here is the free way to turn the recording into a small, readable GIF, and the settings that keep text sharp.

Short answer: QuickTime Player cannot save a GIF. Apple's export page, checked on 23 October 2026, lists 4K, 1080p, 720p, 480p and Audio Only, and does not mention GIF. So you convert the .mov afterwards. The free MOV to GIF converter does it in your browser: drop in the file, pick the part, set the width and frame rate, and download the GIF. The file is not uploaded.

Why QuickTime has no GIF option

Apple's page "Export movies to other file formats and resolutions using QuickTime Player on Mac" says exports are QuickTime (.mov) files in H.264 or HEVC, and that QuickTime Player does not export MP4 videos. The presets are 4K (up to 3840 x 2160), 1080p, 720p and 480p, plus an audio-only option. GIF is not mentioned. The page does not show a date.

So the job has two steps: record, then convert. If you want the MP4 route instead, see convert QuickTime to MP4 on Mac.

Steps: from recording to GIF

  1. Record only the part you need. Press Shift-Command-5 and choose Record Selected Portion, or record in QuickTime. A smaller area gives a sharper, smaller GIF.
  2. Stop the recording. The Screenshot app saves to your desktop unless you changed it. Where do screen recordings go on Mac covers other apps.
  3. Open the MOV to GIF tool. Go to MOV to GIF and drag the file onto the page.
  4. Pick the part. Drag the two handles to where the action starts and ends. Keep it short.
  5. Crop if needed. If you recorded the whole screen, crop to the window or button you want to show.
  6. Set width and frame rate. See the table below.
  7. Make the GIF, check it, download it.

If you would rather record straight to a GIF with no file in between, the screen to GIF tool records a screen, window or tab in the browser.

Settings that keep text readable

A Retina screen recording is saved at the screen's full pixel count. The MOV to GIF page says a full screen recording can be 2,880 pixels wide or more, which is too big for a GIF, so you pick a smaller width. Its own guide suggests these starting points:

SettingStart hereWhy
Width640 or 800 for anything with textText is the first thing to blur when scaled down
Frame rate8 or 12 a secondPointer moves still read, and the file is far smaller than at 20
LengthA few secondsThe tool warns at 150 frames and stops at 600
DitheringAutoFor flat screen content it turns dithering off so edges stay crisp

Check the arithmetic for your clip: at 12 frames a second, 5 seconds is 60 frames, and 600 frames is 50 seconds. These numbers are from the tool's own page, not from a test on your file.

Make the GIF smaller afterwards

GIFs get big fast. If the result is too large for an email or a chat tool, the GIF compressor reduces colours, frames or file size, and the GIF resizer scales it down. Or skip GIF: for long clips, a small MP4 is almost always lighter. How to compress a video on Mac shows how, and MOV vs MP4 for screen recordings says which file to keep.

GIF or video?

A GIF has no sound and loops on its own, so it suits a short click path in a ticket, a doc or a chat. Use video when you need sound, more than a few seconds, or sharp text at full size.

Recording the demo itself

MotionShine, by the maker of this site, is a free Mac screen recorder with auto zoom on clicks, a smooth cursor and a full editor, which helps when the clip is a demo and not a quick bug report. It exports video, not GIF, so for a GIF you would still use the free tool above on the exported file. The free version exports up to 720p at 30 fps with no watermark and no time limit.

FAQ

Can QuickTime Player save a GIF?

No. Apple's export page lists 4K, 1080p, 720p, 480p and Audio Only, and does not mention GIF. Convert the .mov with a separate tool.

How do I convert a Mac screen recording to a GIF for free?

Record with Shift-Command-5 or QuickTime, then drop the .mov into the free MOV to GIF converter. It runs in your browser and does not upload the file.

Why is my GIF so big?

Width and length are the main causes. Use a smaller width, a lower frame rate and a shorter clip, then run it through the GIF compressor.

What width should a screen GIF be?

The tool's guide suggests 640 or 800 pixels for anything with text, and warns that scaling a full screen down to 480 makes menu text too small to read.

Can I convert an MP4 to a GIF instead?

Yes. The MP4 to GIF converter works the same way, and the video to GIF tool takes MOV, MP4, WebM or MKV.

Does a GIF have sound?

No. If you need sound, keep the video.
