How to make a YouTube channel for screen recordings

A channel for tutorials, demos or walkthroughs needs a Google account, a handle, a way to record your screen and a plan for the first few videos. Here are YouTube's own steps, then a workflow for Mac.

Short answer: sign in to YouTube with a Google Account, open your profile picture, then Settings, then Add or manage channel(s), and click Create a channel. Pick a profile picture, a name and a handle, then click Create channel. That is YouTube's own method for a personal channel. If a team will run the channel, make a Brand Account channel instead. After that, the real work is making videos people finish. This guide covers both parts for screen recording channels: the setup, then recording, editing and uploading on a Mac.

The channel and upload steps come from YouTube Help pages that were checked on 23 October 2026: "Create a YouTube channel", "Upload videos", "Upload videos longer than 15 minutes", "Add a custom thumbnail" and "YouTube recommended upload encoding settings". Where a page does not state something, this guide says "not found" instead of guessing. YouTube changes its menus, so if a label looks different, trust the screen.

Step 1: Decide what the channel is for

A screen recording channel works best when one sentence says who it helps and with what. Examples of the shape, not promises about results:

  • Short tutorials for one app, such as a spreadsheet tool or a design tool.
  • Product demos and walkthroughs for a software company.
  • Training videos for a team or a class.
  • Fixes and how-tos for one kind of problem, such as Mac settings.

Pick one. A channel that mixes five topics gives a new viewer no reason to come back. You can widen later.

Personal channel or Brand Account? YouTube Help describes two routes:

Personal channelBrand Account channel
Who manages itOnly youOne or more managers or owners
NameYour name and handleA different name from your Google Account is possible
Good forA solo creatorA company, a team, a course
SourceYouTube Help, "Create a YouTube channel", checked on 23 October 2026Same page

If you are unsure, the same page explains that a Brand Account lets you add owners or managers later through its own help article. If a Brand Account already has a channel, YouTube Help says you cannot create a second one for it.

Step 2: Create the channel

This is the personal channel route from YouTube Help, checked on 23 October 2026.

  1. Sign in to YouTube on a computer or the mobile site.
  2. Click your profile picture, then Settings.
  3. Go to the Account section and select Add or manage channel(s).
  4. Click Create a channel.
  5. Choose a profile picture and enter your name and your handle.
  6. Click Create channel.

For a Brand Account channel, YouTube Help gives these steps:

  1. Sign in to YouTube on a computer or the mobile site.
  2. Go to your channel list.
  3. Click Create a new channel, or select a Brand Account you already manage.
  4. Choose a profile picture, a name and a handle.
  5. Click Create channel. This also creates a new Brand Account.

Both routes ask for a profile picture, a name and a handle. YouTube Help also says that if you use a supervised experience, you may not be able to create a channel. A banner image is not covered on that page, so it is not found there. You can add one later in YouTube Studio if you want.

Choosing the name and handle. Keep it short, easy to say aloud and easy to spell. Say it to a friend and see if they can type it. If the channel is for a product, using the product name makes it easy to find. If it is for you, your own name is fine.

Step 3: Plan your first five videos

New channels stall because the first video is too big. Plan five small videos before you record one.

  1. A "start here" video. What the channel covers and who it is for. One to two minutes.
  2. The question you get asked most. If people keep asking you how to do something, that is video two.
  3. A beginner task. Something a new person can finish in one sitting.
  4. A common mistake and its fix. Viewers search for problems.
  5. A short walkthrough of your whole workflow. It shows how the pieces fit.

For each video, write the answer in one sentence first. If you cannot, the video is not ready. A fill-in outline for the script is in the tutorial video script template.

Search helps decide titles. Type your topic into YouTube's search box and read the suggestions that appear. Those are real searches. Do not copy a rival's title word for word. Say the same thing more clearly, or for a narrower reader.

Step 4: Record your screen on a Mac

You do not need to buy anything to start. Your Mac already records the screen. Press Shift-Command-5, choose what to capture, click Options to pick a microphone, then click Record. The full steps, including how to stop and where the file goes, are in how to record a video on Mac and how to screen record on Mac.

Before you record, do these small things. They make the video look better than any editing will.

  • Close what you do not need. Notifications, chat apps and a messy desktop distract viewers. Turn on Do Not Disturb.
  • Make the text readable. Viewers watch on small screens. Raise the size of text in the app you are showing, or record a smaller area so everything looks larger.
  • Use a real microphone if you can. Viewers forgive a plain screen. They leave when the voice is hard to hear. If you have no microphone, a pair of wired earbuds with a mic is better than a laptop mic in a noisy room. How to record audio from your computer on Mac covers the sound of your Mac itself.
  • Do a ten second test. Record, stop, play it back with headphones.
  • Check for private information. Look for names, emails, tabs and file names on screen. If something slips in, how to blur text in a screenshot covers the still image case.

If you want a longer list, read free Mac screen recording software.

Step 5: Make the recording easy to follow

Raw screen recordings have two common problems. The cursor jumps around, and small details are hard to see. Both are about guiding the viewer's eye.

  • Move slowly and on purpose. Point at something, pause, then click.
  • Zoom in on what matters. When you click a small button, the viewer should see it large.
  • Cut dead time. Remove loading screens, long pauses and "um" moments.
  • Talk about why, not just what. "I click Export" is visible. "I choose this setting because it keeps the text sharp" is not.

MotionShine is made by the maker of this site. It is a free Mac screen recorder. It zooms in automatically on clicks, smooths the cursor, and you can add click effects and motion blur. It also has a full editor with text, pictures, music lanes, voice over and captions that run on your Mac.

That is the point of a tool like this for a channel: you record once, in a normal way, and the zooms and cursor work are done for you. Video editing tips for screen recordings goes deeper on pacing and cuts.

Who it is not for. MotionShine runs on Mac only. The free version exports up to 720p at 30 fps with no watermark and no time limit. Pro unlocks 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 60 fps, with one-time prices. If you need a full multi-camera studio or a live stream, OBS is built for that. If you only need a quick clip, the built-in Shift-Command-5 tool is enough.

Step 6: Edit before you upload

A good edit for a tutorial is simple.

  1. Trim the start and end. Start on the first useful sentence.
  2. Remove mistakes and long waits.
  3. Add short text for key steps or names, so viewers can follow without sound.
  4. Add captions. Many people watch with the sound off. On-device captions in MotionShine are one way. The subtitle generator in the browser is another.
  5. Keep music quiet if you use any. The voice comes first. Use music you have the right to use.
  6. Watch the whole thing once, at normal speed, with headphones.

Step 7: Export in a format YouTube likes

YouTube Help's page "YouTube recommended upload encoding settings", checked on 23 October 2026, lists these recommendations:

SettingYouTube's recommendation
ContainerMP4, no edit lists, moov atom at the front of the file
Video codecH.264, progressive scan, High Profile
Frame rateUpload at the frame rate you recorded. Common rates: 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, 60
Bitrate, 1080p at 30 fps (SDR)8 Mbps
Bitrate, 4K at 30 fps (SDR)35 to 45 Mbps
Audio codecAAC-LC, Opus or Eclipsa Audio, 48 kHz
Audio bitrate, stereo384 kbps

Aspect ratio: the page says 16:9 is standard on computers and other ratios adapt automatically.

What this means in practice: a screen recording at 30 fps should be uploaded at 30 fps. Do not convert it to 60 or to 24 to "improve" it. If your editor saves a .mov, a free browser tool such as the MOV to MP4 converter can change the container. MOV vs MP4 for screen recordings explains the difference, and H.264 vs HEVC for screen recordings explains the codec choice. If your file is too big, the video compressor runs in your browser. For the meaning of bitrate, see what is video bitrate.

YouTube does not require 4K. For tutorials, a clean 1080p is a normal target. Free MotionShine exports stop at 720p, so for 1080p you would need Pro, or another tool.

Step 8: Upload your first video

YouTube Help's "Upload videos" page, checked on 23 October 2026, gives these steps for a computer.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio at studio.youtube.com.
  2. Click Create, then Upload videos.
  3. Select your file. You can upload up to 15 videos at once, and you click Edit on each file to add details.
  4. On the Details page, add a title, description, thumbnail, playlist, audience setting and age restriction. The page says titles are limited to 100 characters and descriptions to 5,000.
  5. Review the Checks page. The copyright check runs in the background, and you can publish while it runs.
  6. Choose Visibility: Private, Unlisted or Public. You can also schedule a publish date. The video stays private until then.
  7. Click Save.

Long videos. YouTube Help says that without verification you can upload videos up to 15 minutes long, and verified accounts can upload longer ones. The same page says the maximum upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is smaller.

Daily limit. The Upload videos page says channels have a daily upload limit. It gives no number, so it is not found there.

The title, description and thumbnail

  • Title: put the task first. "How to export a PDF from Pages" beats "My new video". Keep under the 100 character limit, and say what the viewer gets.
  • Description: the first lines matter most. Say what the video shows and add a short list of steps. Add links to anything you mention.
  • Chapters: for long tutorials, timestamps help viewers jump. The YouTube chapters generator can help you format them.
  • Thumbnail: YouTube Help's "Add a custom thumbnail" page, checked on 23 October 2026, says your account must be verified. For videos it recommends 3840 x 2160 px with a minimum width of 640 px, in JPG or PNG, at a 16:9 ratio. On desktop the limit is 50 MB; on mobile it is 2 MB. Use big words, a clear screenshot and little else. The YouTube thumbnail maker is a free place to start.

Step 9: Keep going

Consistency beats a perfect first video. Some practical habits:

  • Choose a schedule you can keep. One video every week or two is fine. Do not promise daily.
  • Batch your work. Record three videos in a sitting, edit them on another day.
  • Reuse your setup. Same folder, same settings, same intro length. It saves time.
  • Read the comments. Questions are your next video ideas.
  • Look at where viewers drop off in YouTube Studio analytics, and fix that part in the next video.

What about money?

Many people ask about earning from a channel. The YouTube Help page for the Partner Program that was checked on 23 October 2026 ("YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility") did not state general subscriber or watch hour thresholds for ad revenue. It lists numbers only for the Shopping feature, and says each feature has its own requirements beyond subscriber and view counts. It also says that updates to the program take effect on 1 February 2027, and that creators must accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027 to keep fully monetizing. Read that page yourself before you plan around money, because the rules change. This guide makes no promise about earnings or growth, and neither should a video course.

For a business, the value is often different: fewer support questions, easier onboarding, and a place to send people.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with the equipment. A clear voice and a tidy screen matter more than a new tool.
  • Long intros. Say what the video covers in the first ten seconds.
  • Skipping the title. The title and thumbnail decide whether anyone clicks.
  • Too many topics. One video, one task.
  • Leaving private data on screen. Check every frame before upload.
