Snagit alternatives for Mac

Snagit is a screenshot tool that also records video. Which app replaces it depends on which half you use. Here is what Snagit lists today, the options, and when to keep it.

Short answer: it depends on what you use Snagit for. For screenshots with arrows and blurred details, the built in Mac tools plus a markup app cover a lot. For screen recordings that look polished, a recorder with auto zoom fits better. For both in one app, Snagit is still a fair choice. Snagit facts below come from TechSmith's own pages, checked on 23 October 2026.

This post is by the maker of MotionShine, one of the options. It is in its own section so you can judge it.

Why people look for a Snagit alternative

  • The subscription. Snagit is yearly only on the pages read.
  • Videos that look plain. The pages list recording and trimming. They do not list auto zoom or a smooth cursor.
  • They only need part of it. If you take screenshots, you may not need video tools. If you record, you may not need markup.

Press Shift-Command-5 and you can capture a still or record the screen with no extra app. It will not blur emails or make a step guide, but for plain captures it is free and already there. If the file is a .mov and a site wants MP4, the free MOV to MP4 converter runs in your browser.

MotionShine, for recordings

MotionShine is a free Mac screen recorder. Its recordings zoom in on your clicks, smooth the cursor, and let you add click effects and motion blur. The editor has text, pictures, music lanes, voice over and captions made on your Mac. The free version has no watermark and no time limit, and exports up to 720p at 30 fps. Pro unlocks 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 60 fps for a one-time price.

It is not a Snagit replacement for screenshots. It does not do scrolling capture, markup arrows or step guides. It does not make share links. It runs on Mac only.

Keep Snagit if

  • You take lots of screenshots and mark them up with arrows, callouts and text.
  • You use Step Capture to write how-to guides.
  • You need Smart Redact to hide private details fast.
  • You work on both Mac and Windows, since Snagit runs on both.
  • You already own Camtasia, because Camtasia plans include Snagit.

Switch if you mostly record the screen and want the video to look finished without editing.
