01 / Add
Add pictures or a GIF
Drop PNG, JPG or WebP files, or a GIF. A GIF is split into its frames.
Free tool
Turn pictures or a GIF into an animated PNG, also called APNG. Drag the frames into order, give each its own time, choose how many times it plays and the size. You get full colour and real transparency, which a GIF cannot do. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.
Frames, in the order they play
Drag a frame to move it (on a phone, hold it first). Click one to see it in the preview. The box under each frame is its own time in seconds; leave it empty to use the time for all. A GIF you drop is split into its frames, with their own times. Space plays or pauses.
The pictures are read and the animated PNG is written in this tab. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
01 / Add
Drop PNG, JPG or WebP files, or a GIF. A GIF is split into its frames.
02 / Arrange
Drag the frames, set a time for each, pick how many plays and the width.
03 / Save
The file is made again after every change. Its size is shown before you save.
Guide
An animated PNG, or APNG, is a PNG file that holds more than one frame. It plays like a GIF, but it keeps full colour and real transparency, where a GIF is limited to 256 colours and a pixel that is either clear or solid. This APNG maker turns several pictures, or a GIF, into one animated PNG in your browser. You set the order, the time of each frame, how many times it plays and the width, and nothing is uploaded.
MDN lists support for APNG in Chrome from version 59, Edge from 12, Firefox from 3, Opera from 46 and Safari from 8 (checked 19 Oct 2026, MDN image types). MDN also says it suits simple animations that do not need to match a sound track. A program that does not know APNG still opens the file as a normal PNG and shows the first frame, because the PNG specification keeps the first frame as the standard image (checked 19 Oct 2026, W3C PNG, third edition). So the file is safe to share: where the animation is not supported, it falls back to one picture. For a given app or website, check its own help page for what it accepts, since uploads are often converted.
The first frame is stored whole. Each later frame stores only the box around the pixels that changed from the frame before, drawn on top of it, so a mostly still animation stays small. A frame that is exactly the same as the one before is not stored again: its time is added to the earlier frame, and the summary tells you when that happened. The delay of each frame is written in thousandths of a second, so you are not limited to multiples of 0.01 s as a GIF is. The play count is written into the file, and 0 means it plays forever, as the PNG specification says.
| Colours setting | What is written | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic, nothing lost | An indexed file when all frames together use 256 colours or fewer (255 when there are see-through parts), otherwise full colour | Most things |
| Full colour | Every colour of every pixel, with see-through when the frames have it | Photos and gradients |
| 256 colours | One palette of 256 colours for all frames | A smaller file |
The summary above the download names what was written, such as "256 colours or fewer, nothing lost" or "256 colours, some colours merged", so you always know whether the pixels are exact. Width has the most effect on size: halving the width leaves a quarter of the pixels.
The length is the number of frames times the time per frame, plus any fade. Take 12 frames at 0.5 s each: that is 12 times 0.5, or 6 seconds. With Forever it loops. With 3 times it plays 3 times and stops on its last frame, 18 seconds in all.
To save each frame of a GIF as a still, use GIF to PNG. To make a still PNG smaller, use Compress PNG.
Questions
No. The pictures are read and the animated PNG is written in this tab, so nothing leaves your computer.
An animated PNG: a PNG file with more than one frame. It plays like a GIF, with full colour and see-through parts that can fade.
MDN lists APNG support in Chrome 59, Edge 12, Firefox 3, Opera 46 and Safari 8 and later. Programs without support show the first frame as a normal PNG.
Yes. Drop the GIF. It is split into its frames with their own times, and you can reorder, resize and save it as an APNG.
A PNG keeps every colour, while a GIF keeps 256. Pick 256 colours under Colours, or lower the width, to bring the size down.
Yes. With Background set to See-through, clear parts stay clear, and parts that are partly clear are kept in Full colour.
Yes. Type a time in seconds in the small box under a frame. An empty box uses Seconds per frame.
Forever, once, or 2, 3, 5 or 10 times. The count is written into the file.
Only as one picture: its first frame is read. Turn an animated WebP into a GIF first, then drop the GIF here.
No watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.
