Black and white photo, with a film look.

A good black and white photo is more than the colour taken out. Pick a look, or choose how each colour turns grey the way a coloured filter on a film camera would: a red filter darkens a blue sky, a green one softens skin. Add contrast, grain and a warm or cool tone, or go to pure black and white. Drag the line on the photo to compare with the original.

The photo is changed in your browser. It is never uploaded.

Colour filters

Why the filter matters.

01 / Red

Dark skies

Blue turns almost black and clouds stand out. Strong for landscapes and buildings.

02 / Orange

Kind to skin

Skin turns lighter and smoother while the sky darkens a little. A common choice for portraits.

03 / Green

Lighter leaves

Plants and trees turn lighter with more detail, and red tones darken.

Questions

Good to know.

Is the photo saved at full size?

Yes. The preview uses a smaller copy so the sliders respond at once; Download applies the same settings to the full photo.

What does pure black and white do?

Every pixel becomes black or white, like a stamp or a photocopy. Move the cut-off to choose where grey turns black. Dots for the grey parts keeps shading as a pattern of fine dots.

Can I get the colour back later?

Not from the black and white file, so keep your original. To colour an old black and white photo, try colorize photo.

Can I convert many photos at once?

This page does one photo at a time, so each can get its own settings.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in this tab.
