Free tool
Drop a photo and it turns into a pencil drawing in a moment. Choose pencil, charcoal, coloured pencil or ink outlines, set how fine the lines are and how dark, and add a warm paper tint. It uses the classic sketch method rather than AI, so faces stay faces and nothing is invented. Drag the line on the picture to compare.
Photos with good light and a plain background give the cleanest sketches. Very dark photos come out faint: raise the darkness.
The sketch is drawn in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded.
How it works
01 / Grey
The photo becomes shades of grey.
02 / Negative
A soft negative of the grey photo is laid on top with a colour dodge blend.
03 / Lines
Flat areas cancel out to white and edges stay dark, which looks like pencil strokes.
Questions
No. It uses a blend of the photo with a blurred negative of itself, a method people have used in photo editors for years. It is quick, and it never adds things that were not in the photo.
Pencil suits portraits and pets. Charcoal gives bold, smudgy shading for dramatic light. Coloured pencil keeps the photo's colours under the lines, and ink outline suits buildings, products and line art.
The sketch is drawn at the photo's own size, up to 4,000 pixels on the long side, which is plenty for a print.
