How to convert cm to km, with the powers of ten shown.

To convert cm to km, divide the centimeters by 100,000. So 100,000 cm is 1 km, 250,000 cm is 2.5 km and 5,000,000 cm is 50 km. The factor is exact, since a centimeter is 0.01 m and a kilometer is 1,000 m. Dividing by 100,000 is the same as moving the decimal point five places to the left: 750,000 cm becomes 7.5 km.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the length in the Centimeters (cm) box. The page opens on 250,000 cm.
  2. Read kilometers in the big result. The cards give the same length in meters, miles and feet.
  3. For a very small result, such as 40 cm, raise Decimals. 40 cm is 0.0004 km and Auto shows it in full.
  4. Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link and Print chart are on the page.
  5. Press the swap button (or S) to turn kilometers into centimeters.

The powers of ten

NIST list of SI prefixes (checked 26 Oct 2026) gives "kilo" as 10 to the power 3 and "centi" as 10 to the power minus 2. A kilometer is 1,000 meters. A centimeter is 1/100 of a meter. So a kilometer holds 1,000 × 100 = 100,000 centimeters, which is 105. Each jump is a plain step in the ladder:

UnitIn metersIn centimeters
millimeter0.0010.1
centimeter0.011
meter1100
kilometer1,000100,000

A map scale example

Map scales use the same ladder. On a 1:100,000 map, 1 cm on paper stands for 100,000 cm on the ground, which is exactly 1 km. On a 1:50,000 map, 1 cm is 0.5 km, and on a 1:25,000 map it is 0.25 km. A route that measures 12.4 cm on a 1:50,000 map is 12.4 × 50,000 = 620,000 cm, so 6.2 km on the ground.

Known lengths in centimeters

a 10K1,000,00010
a half marathon2,109,75021.0975
a marathon4,219,50042.195

The race lengths are set in kilometers, so these are the same lengths written in centimeters.

Worked examples

  • 1,200 cm. 1,200 ÷ 100,000 = 0.012 km.
  • 40,000 cm. 0.4 km.
  • 1,000,000 cm. 10 km.
  • 75 cm. 0.00075 km. A short length gives a tiny number.
  • 10,000,000 cm. 100 km.

One zero at a time

Every extra zero on the centimeters moves the answer one place to the left. The table shows the pattern from 10 cm to 10 million.

CentimetersKilometers
10 cm0.0001 km
100 cm0.001 km
1,000 cm0.01 km
10,000 cm0.1 km
100,000 cm1 km
1,000,000 cm10 km
10,000,000 cm100 km

The box also reads numbers written in the short form, so 2.5e5 is read as 250,000 cm. That helps when a number comes from a spreadsheet or a science text.

Why not use meters

Centimeters are the unit for small things, like a tape measure, a shelf or a person, and kilometers are for roads and maps. The two rarely meet, except in a data table or a homework question that mixes them on purpose. When you do meet them, go through the meter in your head: 80,000 cm is 800 m, and 800 m is 0.8 km.

Mistakes to avoid

The common slip is moving the decimal point three places, which is the step from meters to kilometers, or two places, which is the step from centimeters to meters. You need both: five places. A second slip is applying the factor to areas. Square centimeters to square kilometers divide by 1010 (10,000,000,000), the square of the length factor. A third slip is a typing one: the box wants digits, with or without commas, so 250,000 and 250000 both work.

A quick way to check

Count the zeros. 100,000 has five, and a result with fewer than five digits before the decimal point should be below 1 km. 40,000 cm has five digits, so its answer 0.4 km must be below 1. A result above 1 for a number below 100,000 means the point went the wrong way.

For the reverse see km to cm. The middle steps are on cm to m and m to km. For miles use km to miles.

Questions

Good to know.

How many cm are in a km?

100,000 centimeters. That is 1,000 meters times 100.

How do I convert cm into kilometers?

Divide by 100,000, or move the decimal point five places left. 3,500,000 cm is 35 km.

What is the cm to km formula?

km = cm ÷ 100,000, which is cm × 0.00001.

How many km is 100,000 cm?

Exactly 1 km.

How many km is 500,000 cm?

5 km. That is a 5K.

How many km is 1 cm?

0.00001 km. It is a tiny number, so Auto shows it in full.

Is cm to km the same as m to km?

No. Meters to kilometers divides by 1,000. Centimeters to kilometers divides by 100,000, because a centimeter is a hundredth of a meter.
