KM to cm converter, how many cm in a km.

Type kilometers and read centimeters. To convert km to cm, multiply by 100,000, which adds five zeros to a whole number. There are 100,000 cm in one kilometer, so 2.5 km is 250,000 cm.

Guide

How to convert km to cm, and how many cm are in a km.

To convert km to cm, multiply the kilometers by 100,000. So 1 km is 100,000 cm, 5 km is 500,000 cm and 0.5 km is 50,000 cm. The factor is exact. Because 100,000 is a power of ten, you can also work it out by moving the decimal point five places to the right and filling empty places with zeros.

How to use the converter

  1. Type the distance in the Kilometers (km) box. The page opens on 2.5 km.
  2. Read centimeters in the big result, with commas for the thousands. The cards give meters, millimeters and miles.
  3. Type decimals freely: 0.75 km is 75,000 cm. Decimals only matters when the result has places after the point.
  4. Use Copy result to copy a line like "2.5 km = 250,000 cm", Copy link to share the number, or Print chart. Click a row of Common values to load it.
  5. The swap button (or S) turns centimeters into kilometers.

Two jumps or one

You can reach centimeters in two steps. A kilometer is 1,000 meters, and each meter is 100 centimeters. So 1,000 × 100 = 100,000. The NIST list of SI prefixes (checked 26 Oct 2026) lists kilo as 103 and centi as 10-2, and 103 ÷ 10-2 = 105. Do it in one step if you remember five zeros, or in two steps if you prefer to say "times a thousand, then times a hundred".

Place values

KilometersAdd the zerosCentimeters

0.7575 + 00075,000
0.011 + 0001,000
1212 + 000001,200,000

A decimal in front is not a problem: when the kilometers have fewer than five decimal places, the shift leaves a whole number. When they have more, as in 0.123456 km, the result has a decimal part: 12,345.6 cm.

A mile is 1.609344 km, which is 160,934.4 cm. The conversion from miles to kilometers is on km to miles.

Going back to check

Every answer can be checked by dividing it by 100,000. 250,000 cm ÷ 100,000 = 2.5 km, which is where this page started. The same check works on any other row of the table: if the division does not give back your kilometers, a zero has been lost.

Worked examples

  • 3 km. 3 × 100,000 = 300,000 cm.
  • 0.25 km. 25,000 cm.
  • 0.001 km. 100 cm, one meter.
  • 50 km. 5,000,000 cm.
  • 1,000 km. 100,000,000 cm, which is 100 million cm.

One zero at a time

Each step up the table adds a zero to the centimeters and moves the kilometer number one place to the right.

0.0001 km10 cm
0.001 km100 cm

0.1 km10,000 cm
1 km100,000 cm
10 km1,000,000 cm
100 km10,000,000 cm

That is also why the smallest row, 0.00001 km, is exactly 1 cm.

Scientific notation

In powers of ten, 1 km is 1 × 105 cm. The box reads this form too: 2.5e5 means 250,000, and 3e-3 means 0.003. For a long run of zeros this is easier to type and to read back. If you need to write a number such as 4.2195 × 106 cm, that is 4,219,500 cm, the marathon length in the table above.

In a spreadsheet

If you have a column of kilometers and want centimeters, multiply the cell by 100000. Writing the factor as 1E5 also works in most spreadsheets. The result stays exact for ordinary numbers. This page is handy to check one value before you fill the column down.

Mistakes to avoid

Multiplying by 1,000 gives meters, and multiplying by 100 takes you from meters to centimeters; you need both. Another slip is forgetting the zeros when the result is large. 12 km is 1,200,000 cm, with five zeros added to 12. For areas the factor is squared: 1 km² is 10,000,000,000 cm². Use the Common values table when in doubt.

The reverse is on cm to km. The middle steps are km to m and m to cm.
