Guide
How to convert mg to kg, and keep all those zeros straight.
To convert mg to kg, divide the milligrams by 1,000,000. So 500,000 mg is 0.5 kg, 2,500,000 mg is 2.5 kg and 1,000 mg is 0.001 kg. Move the decimal point six places to the left. The answer is exact. Going the other way, multiply kilograms by 1,000,000: 0.25 kg is 250,000 mg. The numbers get long because a milligram is so small next to a kilogram, and the zeros are where mistakes creep in.
How to use the converter
- Type the amount in the Milligrams (mg) box. You can type a big number, such as 500000 or 1,500,000.
- The big result shows Kilograms (kg). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
- The cards under the result show the same amount in other units.
- Type in the second box, or press ⇄, to go the other way.
- Click a row in Common values to load it. Copy result, Copy link, Copy table and Print chart keep the answer. Start again resets the box.
- Under the tables, Convert a list takes many amounts at once. Paste one per line, for example a column from a spreadsheet, and read them all in the units shown above. Copy results copies the table, and the swap button turns the list around.
Where the million comes from
NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives 1 kilogram as 1,000 grams exactly and 1 milligram as 0.001 gram exactly. So a kilogram holds 1,000 × 1,000 = 1,000,000 milligrams. The prefix list at the BIPM list of SI prefixes (checked 26 Oct 2026) gives kilo as 103 and milli as 10-3, which is the same: six steps of ten. In scientific form, 1 mg = 1 × 10-6 kg.

Worked examples
- 500,000 mg. 500,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.5 kg.
- 2,500 mg. 0.0025 kg, which is 2.5 g.
- A 3.5 kg baby. Swap the boxes: 3.5 kg is 3,500,000 mg.
- A 70 kg adult. 70 kg is 70,000,000 mg. That is a big number for a simple idea, which is why these two units are rarely used together.
- A 75,000,000 mg load. 75 kg, or 165.35 pounds.
Why mg and kg rarely meet
A milligram is for tiny amounts and a kilogram is for bodies and bags. Where the two appear together, it is usually in a rate such as mg per kg, which says how many milligrams go with each kilogram of body or sample mass. That is a ratio, not a mass, and this converter does not work it out. Turn milligrams into kilograms only when you need one total in one unit. If you start from a body weight in kg, type it in the second box to read it in mg.
This page is a unit converter. It changes one unit of mass into another and nothing more. It does not say how much of anything is right for you. For a medicine, a vitamin or a supplement, follow the label and ask a doctor or a pharmacist.
Mistakes to avoid
The first is a slip by three places. Dividing by 1,000 gives grams, not kilograms. The second is counting the zeros wrongly: a million has six. A check is that 1,000,000 mg should come out as exactly 1 kg. The third is mixing up the units: mg is a milligram and Mg, with a capital M, is a megagram, a metric ton. The fourth is reading a rate as a mass.
