Guide

How to keep score online, for any game.

An online scoreboard keeps the score on a screen so everyone can see it. This one has up to 8 teams, each with a name and a colour, big plus and minus buttons, a key for every team, an undo, a round counter, a game timer and a full screen view with very large numbers. The team in front is highlighted as the score leader, and it all stays in your browser, with no account.

How to use the scoreboard

  1. Click a team name and type over it. Click the small colour square to pick that team's colour.
  2. Under Points per press choose 1, 2, 3 or Custom and type your own number. Every plus and minus button follows it.
  3. Press the big plus or minus under a team. On a keyboard, press 1 for the first team, 2 for the second and so on up to 8. Hold Shift to take points away.
  4. Press Undo or the Z key to go back one change. It remembers your last 100.
  5. Press Add a team for a third team, up to 8, or Remove last to take one off.
  6. Press Full screen, or the F key, for the display view.

Rounds and the game timer

Tick Show a round counter for a Round box with its own plus and minus. Move on with the N key. Tick Show a game timer for a clock in the same look as the stopwatch. Count up times a game from zero. Count down starts from the minutes you type, such as 10 for a ten minute quarter, and stops at 0:00 with the board flashing. Start and stop it with the button or the space bar. Reset scores clears the points and Reset everything also clears the round and the timer. Both can be undone, except the timer.

Showing it on a second screen

Press Open display window. A second window opens with only the scoreboard on a black background. Drag it onto a projector or a TV, press F in it for full screen, and keep scoring from the first window. Both windows are in the same browser on the same computer and are linked by the browser itself, so nothing goes over the internet. If the display ever looks out of date, close it and open it again.

Ideas for using it

  • Classroom review games. Split the class into 4 to 6 teams, award 1 to 3 points a question and turn on the round counter. Use Custom for bonus questions worth 5.
  • Pub quiz and trivia night. Eight teams fit. Score rounds with the 1, 2 and 3 steps and show the board full screen between rounds.
  • Sport and backyard games. Basketball with steps of 1, 2 and 3 points, a timer counting down a quarter and a key for each team.
  • Board and card games. Use one team per player with your own step, and let the leader highlight show who is ahead.

How the leader is picked

The leader is the team with the highest score. If two or more teams share the top score, nobody is highlighted, so a tie is never shown as a lead. Untick Highlight the leader if you do not want it shown. Scores can go below zero, so a team can lose points in a penalty round.

Good to remember

  • Names, colours, scores, the step and your options are kept in this browser, so they are there after a reload. Clearing the site's data wipes them.
  • The number keys work when you are not typing in a box. Click outside a name box first.
  • With 7 or 8 teams, full screen shows them in rows, with smaller numbers than with 2 teams.
  • For a countdown to a date, rather than a game clock, use the countdown to date. To split a group into teams first, try the team generator.

Questions

Good to know.

Is there a scoreboard website that needs no sign-up?

This one. Open the page, name the teams and start scoring. There is no account, no app and no limit on games.

How many teams can I add?

Up to 8. Use Add a team and Remove last to change the number. Each team has its own name, colour and key.

How do I show the score leader?

It is on by default. The team with the highest score gets a glow and a Leading label. If teams tie at the top, nobody is highlighted.

Can I show the scoreboard on a projector or a second screen?

Yes. Press Open display window, drag the new window to the other screen and press F for full screen. Keep scoring in the first window and the second follows.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The plus and minus buttons are large enough for a thumb. Number keys need a keyboard, and the second window works best on a computer.

Will my scores be there after I close the tab?

Yes, in the same browser. The names, colours, scores, step and options are kept in this browser. They are not sent anywhere.

Can I give points for more than 1 at a time?

Yes. Choose 2, 3 or Custom under Points per press, and every plus and minus uses it. Custom takes any whole number.

How do I undo a wrong tap?

Press Undo or the Z key. It steps back through your last 100 changes to scores and rounds.

Can the timer count down?

Yes. Tick Show a game timer, choose Count down and type the minutes. It stops at 0:00 and the board flashes.
