Guide
How to read a piano chord page.
A piano chord is a few keys pressed at once. Each page here names the notes, shows them on a keyboard, and puts a finger number on every lit key. Finger 1 is the thumb and 5 is the little finger. The right hand plays the chord around the middle of the keyboard and the left hand plays it one octave lower.
The six types
- Major is the root, a major third and a perfect fifth, for example C, E, G.
- Minor lowers the third by one semitone, for example C, Eb, G.
- Dominant 7th adds a minor seventh to a major chord, for example C, E, G, Bb.
- Major 7th adds a major seventh to a major chord, for example C, E, G, B.
- Minor 7th adds a minor seventh to a minor chord, for example C, Eb, G, Bb.
- Diminished stacks two minor thirds, for example C, Eb, Gb.
Inversions
Each chord page lists the inversions, which are the same notes with another one at the bottom. They help your hand move less between chords. A three-note chord has three positions and a four-note chord has four.

Questions
Good to know.
How many piano chords are there here?
There are 72 pages: twelve roots (C, C#/Db, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, Ab, A, Bb and B) in six types, which are major, minor, dominant 7th, major 7th, minor 7th and diminished.
What are the notes in a major chord?
A major chord is the root, the note four semitones above it and the note seven semitones above it. C major is C, E and G.
What is the difference between a major and a minor chord?
Only the middle note. A minor chord has its third one semitone lower than a major chord, so C major is C, E, G and C minor is C, Eb, G.
Which fingers do I use for piano chords?
For a three-note chord the right hand usually uses fingers 1, 3 and 5 and the left hand 5, 3 and 1. For a four-note chord the right hand uses 1, 2, 3 and 5 and the left hand 5, 3, 2 and 1.
What is an inversion?
The same notes with a different one at the bottom. A triad has root position, first inversion and second inversion. A 7th chord has a third inversion as well.
Why are some chords named with sharps and some with flats?
Each chord takes the spelling that sheet music uses for it. Db major is written with flats because C# major would need seven sharps, while F# major is written with sharps.
Where are guitar and ukulele shapes?
The chord finder shows guitar and ukulele shapes for 22 chord types, as well as the piano keys.
