To convert quarts to ounces, multiply the quarts by 32. A US quart is 32 US fluid ounces, so 1 quart is 32 fl oz, 2 quarts is 64 fl oz and 4 quarts, a gallon, is 128 fl oz. The answer is a volume. If you meant ounces of weight, see the section further down, because the two are not the same thing. To go back, divide by 32: 96 fl oz is 3 quarts.

Where the 32 comes from

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C counts 16 fluid ounces to the US pint, 2 pints to the quart and 4 quarts to the gallon, so a quart is 32 fluid ounces and a gallon is 128. Checked 26 Oct 2026. Quarts to ounces in a table

Worked examples

• A 2 quart pitcher. 2 × 32 = 64 fl oz, which is eight 8-ounce cups.
• 1 1/2 quarts of broth. Type 1 1/2 and read 48 fl oz.
• 3 quarts of juice. 96 fl oz, or 2.8391 L.
• A 20 fl oz bottle in quarts. Use the swap button and type 20: 0.625 quart.
• A 64 fl oz bottle. 2 quarts, which is half a gallon.

Fluid ounces are not weight ounces

A fluid ounce measures space and an ounce on a scale measures mass. They only match for something that weighs about as much as water. Water is close to 1 g per mL, so a quart of water weighs about 33.38 oz on a scale, not 32. A quart of honey weighs more and a quart of oil weighs less. If a recipe lists a weight in ounces and you have a jug in quarts, you need the density of the food. See mL to grams and grams to ounces.

The UK quart has more ounces

A UK quart is 40 UK fluid ounces, not 32, because the UK pint has 20 ounces. The Handbook says the imperial gallon has 160 fluid ounces, against 128 for the US gallon. The UK ounce is smaller (28.4131 mL against 29.5735 mL) but a UK quart still holds more: 1.13652 L against 0.946353 L. The last card on the page shows UK pints as UK fluid ounces.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is mixing fluid and weight ounces. The second is using 16, the number of ounces in a pint, instead of 32. The third is the US and UK ounce: a recipe that says "20 fl oz to the pint" is British. The fourth is rounding the quart to a liter. A quart is 5.4 percent less than a liter.
