Quarts to pints converter, every quart is two pints.

To convert quarts to pints, multiply the quarts by 2. A US quart holds 2 pints, so 1 quart is 2 pints, 2.5 quarts is 5 pints and 4 quarts is 8 pints. It is an exact whole-number sum, and the reverse is a halving: 10 pints is 5 quarts. People type this as "qt to pt" because both words are printed with those two short symbols on cartons and measuring jugs.

How to use the converter

1. Type the amount in the US quarts (qt) box. A decimal such as 1.5 or a fraction such as 3/4 works.
2. The big result shows US pints (pt). Use Decimals in the side column to fix the number of places.
3. The cards under the result show the same amount in other units.
4. Type in the second box, or press ⇄, to go the other way.

Where the 2 comes from

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists 2 pints = 1 quart and 4 quarts = 1 gallon, with 16 fluid ounces to the pint and 32 to the quart. Checked 26 Oct 2026. In millilitres a quart is 946.3529 mL and a pint is 473.1765 mL, exactly half of it. The picture shows the same gallon cut four ways, with the quarts and the pints they hold lit up.

Each row is one US gallon. The numbers are US fluid ounces in each part.

Quarts to pints in a table

Worked examples

• 3 quarts of cream. 3 × 2 = 6 pints.
• A half-gallon carton, which is 2 quarts. 4 pints.
• 1 1/2 quarts of soup. Type 1 1/2 and read 3 pints, so three pint containers.
• 5 quarts of oil. 10 pints, which is 4.7318 L.
• Pints back to quarts. 7 pints ÷ 2 = 3.5 quarts.

UK quarts and dry quarts

A UK quart is also 2 pints, so the sum is the same, but the pint is bigger. In NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 the US liquid quart is 0.9463529 L, and the Handbook says the British gallon has 160 fluid ounces, so a UK quart is 40 UK fluid ounces, 1.13652 L. Dry measures are separate. NIST lists the US dry quart as 1.101221 L and the dry pint as 0.5506105 L, so a dry quart is also 2 dry pints, but neither matches the liquid pint. This page is for liquid quarts. If a label gives a UK quart, the count in pints is right but the volume is larger.

Mistakes to avoid

Dividing by 2 when you should multiply is the common slip. One way to check is to ask whether the number should grow: pints are the smaller unit, so there are always more pints than quarts. The second mistake is thinking of "pt" as the typographic point. On a recipe or a jug it is the pint. The third is using a quart and a liter as if they were the same: a US quart is 0.946 L. The fourth is using a dry pint for a liquid recipe.
