Pints to gallons converter, eight pints make one gallon.

To convert pints to gallons, divide the pints by 8. There are 8 pints in a US gallon, so 8 pints is 1 gallon, 4 pints is 0.5 gallon and 1 pint is 0.125 gallon. The sum is exact. How to use the converter

The ladder: 1 gallon, 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups

The US liquid measures double each time you go down a step. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives 2 pints to a quart and 4 quarts to a gallon, and counts 16 fluid ounces to a pint and 128 to a gallon. Checked 26 Oct 2026. So a gallon is 4 quarts, which is 8 pints, which is 16 cups. Teachers call this the 2-4-8-16 ladder. Pints are the third rung, so the gallon sum for pints is 8.

Each row is one US gallon. The numbers are US fluid ounces in each part.

Pints to gallons, in a table

Worked examples

• 12 pints of ice cream. 12 ÷ 8 = 1.5 gallons, which is 6 quarts.
• A drink for 24 guests, one pint each. 24 pints ÷ 8 = 3 gallons.
• 20 pints of milk. 2.5 gallons. In liters that is 9.4635 L.
• 3 pints. 0.375 gallon, which is 48 fluid ounces.
• Gallons back to pints. 2.5 gallons × 8 = 20 pints.

The US pint is not the UK pint

The count stays the same on both sides of the Atlantic, because a UK gallon is also 8 pints. The size does not. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C says the British gallon is divided into 160 fluid ounces, with 20 ounces to the pint, where the US gallon has 128. The values in millilitres come from NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8, read 26 Oct 2026.

So 8 UK pints is 4.54609 L, about 20 percent more than 8 US pints. The last card under the result gives UK pints as UK gallons. Use it only when the recipe or label is British or Canadian.

Dry pints are another measure

A basket of berries or tomatoes is sold by the dry pint. NIST SP 811, Appendix B.8 lists the US dry pint as 0.5506105 L, against 0.4731765 L for the liquid pint, so it holds about 16 percent more. Do not use the gallon sum on dry pints. This tool is for liquid pints.

Mistakes to avoid

The first is dividing by 4, which turns pints into quarts and not gallons. The second is mixing the US and UK sizes. The third is treating "ounces" on a bottle as weight: the 16 ounces in a pint are fluid ounces, a measure of volume. The fourth is rounding early. Keep the exact figure and round only the final gallons.
