01 / Draw
Names in, pairs out
The draw is random and every rule is kept: nobody gets themselves, and pairs you list never draw each other.
Free tool
Type the names, add any pairs who should not draw each other, and press Draw names. Each person gets a private link that hides their person until they tap to open it. The draw is worked out in your browser and the pairings live only inside the links, so nothing is stored or sent. You can add a budget, a gift day and a hint for each person, and print slips with the name folded inside.
Add a bar and a hint after a name to give that person's Santa an idea, like Blair | likes tea and board games.
One rule on each line. A + B stops both ways. A > B stops only A giving to B.
The draw happens in your browser. Names are not uploaded. The names and settings you type are kept in this browser for next time; the draw itself is never saved.
How it works
01 / Draw
The draw is random and every rule is kept: nobody gets themselves, and pairs you list never draw each other.
02 / Links
Each link holds only that person's draw, after the # sign, so the page that serves this tool never receives it.
03 / Slips
Slips print with the name upside down inside a fold, so a printed slip does not show the name.
Guide
A Secret Santa generator takes a list of names and gives every person one other person to buy a gift for, in secret. This one does the whole job in your browser: it draws the names so nobody gets themselves, keeps apart any pairs you choose, and makes one private link for each person. There is no account, no email address to collect, and no list kept on a server. You can also add a budget, a gift day and a hint for each person, and print slips if you would rather hand out paper.
Blair | likes tea and board games. The hint goes to whoever draws Blair. The tool shuffles the names with your browser's secure random numbers and checks the result against your rules. If a shuffle breaks a rule, it shuffles again. Every legal draw is equally likely, which is what you want from a fair draw. When the rules are tight and plain shuffling keeps failing, it falls back to a search that still finds a legal draw if one exists, and it tells you if none does.
By default nobody draws the person who draws them, so you never get two people giving to each other. Untick Nobody draws the person who draws them if swaps are fine. Most groups of four or more can be drawn without a swap, but a few rule sets make that impossible, and then the tool says a swap had to stay in.
How many different draws are there? For a group where nobody draws themselves, the count grows quickly:
| People | Different draws | With one couple kept apart |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 2 | 0 |
| 4 | 9 | 4 |
| 5 | 44 | 24 |
| 6 | 265 | 168 |
The 3 person row shows a real limit. With three people and a couple kept apart, the third person cannot be given to by both of the couple, so no draw exists, and the tool tells you so. From four people up there is room. In the 6 person row, the 168 comes from taking the 265 draws and removing every one in which Alex draws Blair or Blair draws Alex.
Each link looks like the page address followed by a # and a block of letters. That block holds one person's draw: the event, the budget, their name, the name of the person they drew and the hint. Browsers do not send the part after the # to a website when they open a link, so the server that delivers this page never receives a draw. Nothing is stored, and there is no database to leak.
Be clear about what that protects and what it does not.
The budget and gift day are free text, so write them the way your group does: Up to $25, 20 euro, Friday 19 Dec. They appear on every link and every slip. For gift ideas, either add a hint after each name yourself, or let people fill in the Secret Santa questionnaire and paste their lines into the list. Hints are cut at 300 characters so the links stay short enough for chat apps.
For other group jobs, try the team generator to split people into groups, or the random name picker for a single winner.
Questions
The server that delivers this page never sees your draw, because each pairing sits after the # sign in a link and browsers do not send that part. The links can be read by anyone who holds them, so send each one only to its person.
Yes. There is no sign-up and no email field. You copy each person's link or message and send it through whatever app you already use.
Yes. Use Add rule to pick two names, or type a rule such as Alex + Blair. A + B works both ways, and A > B stops only A giving to B, which is handy for keeping last year's match apart.
Only if you tick Show who drew whom on this screen. It is off by default so an organiser who is playing is not spoiled. The links themselves can still be decoded by a technical person.
Press Copy link again while the page is still open. If you closed the page, the draw is gone, because nothing is saved. You would need to draw again and send new links to everyone.
Up to 200 names. The minimum is 3.
It uses your browser's secure random number generator and checks every rule. Plain shuffles are tried first, so each legal draw is equally likely in normal cases.
Only when your rules leave no swap-free draw. The tool says so, and you can remove a rule to get one.
The name is printed upside down in the lower half of each slip, inside a fold. Fold on the middle line before you hand it over.
