    How it works

    Look, hide, then be tested.

    01 / Ten plus two

    10k + 2k

    12 × 7 is 70 plus 14. That makes 84.

    02 / Double sixes

    6 table doubled

    6 × 8 = 48, so 12 × 8 = 96.

    03 / A dozen

    12 in a set

    A dozen is 12, so 5 dozen is 12 × 5 = 60.

    Guide

The 12 times table, with worked examples.

The 12 times table is 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120, 132, 144 up to 12 × 12. It is the biggest table on a standard chart, and it is built from tables you may already know. The tool above shows the table, hides answers, runs a scored quiz, and prints a chart or sheet.

How to use the 12 times table tool

    1. Click Table to see the facts, the patterns for this number and the skip counting line. Go up to shows the table to 10, 12, 15 or 20.

    The 12 times table, 1 to 12

SumAnswerA way to work it out
    12 × 11210 × 1 = 10, plus 2 × 1 = 2, gives 12
    12 × 22410 × 2 = 20, plus 2 × 2 = 4, gives 24
    12 × 33610 × 3 = 30, plus 2 × 3 = 6, gives 36
    12 × 44810 × 4 = 40, plus 2 × 4 = 8, gives 48
    12 × 56010 × 5 = 50, plus 2 × 5 = 10, gives 60
    12 × 67210 × 6 = 60, plus 2 × 6 = 12, gives 72
    12 × 78410 × 7 = 70, plus 2 × 7 = 14, gives 84
    12 × 89610 × 8 = 80, plus 2 × 8 = 16, gives 96
    12 × 910810 × 9 = 90, plus 2 × 9 = 18, gives 108
    12 × 1012010 × 10 = 100, plus 2 × 10 = 20, gives 120
    12 × 1113210 × 11 = 110, plus 2 × 11 = 22, gives 132
    12 × 1214410 × 12 = 120, plus 2 × 12 = 24, gives 144

    Ten plus two

    Twelve is 10 + 2. For 12 × 7, do 10 × 7 = 70 and 2 × 7 = 14, then add: 84. For 12 × 9: 90 + 18 = 108. For 12 × 12: 120 + 24 = 144. This works for any number, and it only needs the 10 and 2 tables.

    Double the 6 table

    Twelve is 6 doubled, so 12 × k is double 6 × k. 6 × 8 = 48 and 12 × 8 = 96. 6 × 11 = 66 and 12 × 11 = 132. It is also 3 × 4 × k: 12 × 6 is 4 × 6 = 24, then 3 × 24 = 72.

    Patterns in the first four

The first four answers, 12, 24, 36, 48, climb with the tens digit up by 1 and the ones digit up by 2. After that, 60 breaks the pattern. The ones digit then cycles 2, 4, 6, 8, 0 and repeats every five steps, and every answer is even.

    Divisible by 12

    A number is in the 12 times table if it is divisible by both 3 and 4. 156 has a digit sum of 1 + 5 + 6 = 12, which is in the 3 table, and ends in 56, which is in the 4 table. So 156 = 12 × 13.

    Worked examples

    • Dozens. 7 dozen eggs are 12 × 7 = 84 eggs.
    • Double sixes. 12 × 9: 6 × 9 = 54, doubled is 108.
    • Division. 96 ÷ 12 = 8, because 12 × 8 = 96.
    • Missing number. 12 × ? = 144. The answer is 12.
    • Past 12. 12 × 13 = 156 and 12 × 20 = 240.

    Beyond 12: 12 × 13 to 12 × 20

Set Go up to to 20 and the tool shows these as well. For any of them, split the number: 12 × 13 is 12 × 10 plus 12 × 3, which is 120 + 36 = 156.

    SumAnswer
    12 × 13156
    12 × 14168
    12 × 15180
    12 × 16192
    12 × 17204
    12 × 18216
    12 × 19228
    12 × 20240

    Common mistakes

    • Giving 12 × 7 as 74 or 82. It is 84.
    • Forgetting to double: 12 × 8 is 96, not 48.
    • Mixing up 12 × 11 = 132 and 11 × 12 = 132. They are the same fact, in two orders.

    A way to learn it

Learn 12 × 1 to 12 × 5 using ten plus two. Then use the 6 table for 12 × 6 to 12 × 10, and learn 132 and 144 last. Hide the answers and test them all.

Next, try the 1 times table, or go back to the 11 times table. To see every table in one grid, use the times tables chart. To make your own cards, try the flashcard maker.
