01 / Double double
4 = 2 × 2
Double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28. That is 4 × 7.
Free tool
The 4 times table runs 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48. Double a number twice and you have it times 4. Read the table, hide the answers, take a scored quiz, or print a chart or practice sheet. No sign-up and no limit.

How it works
01 / Double double
Double 7 to get 14, then double 14 to get 28. That is 4 × 7.
02 / Last digits
The ones digit repeats every five steps, and every answer is even.
03 / Half of eight
The 4 table is half the 8 table: 8 × 6 = 48, so 4 × 6 = 24.
Guide
The 4 times table lists the multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48 up to 4 × 12. Because 4 is 2 × 2, doubling twice gives the answer, and it is the 2 table doubled. The tool above shows the table, hides answers, runs a scored quiz with a hint for every miss, and prints a chart or sheet.
| Sum | Answer | A way to work it out |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × 1 | 4 | Double 1 is 2, double again = 4 |
| 4 × 2 | 8 | Double 2 is 4, double again = 8 |
| 4 × 3 | 12 | Double 3 is 6, double again = 12 |
| 4 × 4 | 16 | Double 4 is 8, double again = 16 |
| 4 × 5 | 20 | Double 5 is 10, double again = 20 |
| 4 × 6 | 24 | Double 6 is 12, double again = 24 |
| 4 × 7 | 28 | Double 7 is 14, double again = 28 |
| 4 × 8 | 32 | Double 8 is 16, double again = 32 |
| 4 × 9 | 36 | Double 9 is 18, double again = 36 |
| 4 × 10 | 40 | Double 10 is 20, double again = 40 |
| 4 × 11 | 44 | Double 11 is 22, double again = 44 |
| 4 × 12 | 48 | Double 12 is 24, double again = 48 |
For 4 × 6, double 6 to get 12, then double 12 to get 24. For 4 × 9, double 9 to get 18 and double again to get 36. For 4 × 12: 12, 24, 48. If you know your doubles up to 24, the 4 table needs no memory at all.
The ones digit goes 4, 8, 2, 6, 0, then 4, 8, 2, 6, 0 again. 4 × 5 = 20 ends in 0, and 4 × 6 = 24 starts the cycle over. Every answer is even.
A whole number is in the 4 times table if its last two digits make a number in the table. 316 ends in 16, which is 4 × 4, so 316 is divisible by 4: 316 = 4 × 79. 518 ends in 18, which is not in the table (the nearest are 16 and 20), so 518 is not.
Because 4 × 25 = 100, a quarter of 100 is 25. This helps with larger facts: 4 × 26 is 100 plus 4, which is 104. 4 × 24 is 100 minus 4, which is 96.
Set Go up to to 20 and the tool shows these as well. For any of them, split the number: 4 × 13 is 4 × 10 plus 4 × 3, which is 40 + 12 = 52.
| Sum | Answer |
|---|---|
| 4 × 13 | 52 |
| 4 × 14 | 56 |
| 4 × 15 | 60 |
| 4 × 16 | 64 |
| 4 × 17 | 68 |
| 4 × 18 | 72 |
| 4 × 19 | 76 |
| 4 × 20 | 80 |
If you know the 2 table, double each answer. Then say the 4 table aloud and hide the answers. When it is steady, move on to the 5 times table or on to 8, which is the 4 table doubled once more.
Next, try the 5 times table, or go back to the 3 times table. To see every table in one grid, use the times tables chart. To make your own cards, try the flashcard maker.
Questions
4 × 4 = 16.
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48.
Double the number, then double the result.
Yes. Four is even, so every answer is even.
Look at the last two digits. If they make a number in the table (such as 16, 24, 36 or 48), so does the whole number.
Eight is 4 doubled, so 8 × 7 = 56 is 4 × 7 = 28 doubled.
