    How it works

    Look, hide, then be tested.

    01 / Five plus two

    5k + 2k

    7 × 8 is 40 plus 16. That is 56.

    02 / Last digits

    7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0

Every digit appears once in ten steps, and the cycle repeats.

    03 / Two left

    7 × 7 and 7 × 8

Once you know the other tables, only 49 and 56 are left to learn.

    Guide

The 7 times table, with worked examples.

The 7 times table lists the multiples of 7: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84 up to 7 × 12. It has no simple trick like the 5 or 9 table, but if you already know the other tables, most of it is facts you have met. The tool above shows the table, hides answers, runs a scored quiz, and prints a chart or sheet.

How to use the 7 times table tool

    1. Click Table to see the facts, the patterns for this number and the skip counting line. Go up to shows the table to 10, 12, 15 or 20.

    7 × 3215 × 3 = 15, plus 2 × 3 = 6, gives 21
    7 × 4285 × 4 = 20, plus 2 × 4 = 8, gives 28
    7 × 5355 × 5 = 25, plus 2 × 5 = 10, gives 35
    7 × 6425 × 6 = 30, plus 2 × 6 = 12, gives 42

    7 × 12845 × 12 = 60, plus 2 × 12 = 24, gives 84

    Which facts are already known

    Seven times 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 come from the easy tables. 7 × 6 = 42 is 6 × 7 from the 6 table. 7 × 9 = 63 is 9 × 7. 7 × 11 = 77 comes from the 11 table and 7 × 12 = 84 from the 12 table. Once you know every table except 7 and 8, that leaves 7 × 7 = 49 and 7 × 8 = 56, which is a short list to learn by heart.

    Five plus two

    Seven is 5 + 2, so 7 × k is 5 × k plus 2 × k. For 7 × 6: 30 + 12 = 42. For 7 × 7: 35 + 14 = 49. For 7 × 8: 40 + 16 = 56. For 7 × 9: 45 + 18 = 63. For 7 × 12: 60 + 24 = 84.

    Last digits use every digit

    The ones digit goes 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0 and then starts over: 7 × 10 = 70 ends in 0 and 7 × 11 = 77 ends in 7. Each digit from 0 to 9 appears once in ten steps. Answers alternate odd and even.

    5, 6, 7, 8

    The fact people mix up is 7 × 8 = 56. Say the run 5, 6, 7, 8: 56 = 7 × 8. 7 × 7 = 49 is the next step down, one group of 7 fewer than 56.

    Worked examples

    • Reading plan. 7 pages a day for 8 days is 7 × 8 = 56 pages.
    • Five plus two. 7 × 9: 5 × 9 = 45, 2 × 9 = 18, and 45 + 18 = 63.
    • Division. 49 ÷ 7 = 7, because 7 × 7 = 49.
    • Missing number. 7 × ? = 84. The answer is 12.
    • Past 12. 7 × 13 is 70 plus 21, which is 91. 7 × 15 = 105.

    Beyond 12: 7 × 13 to 7 × 20

Set Go up to to 20 and the tool shows these as well. For any of them, split the number: 7 × 13 is 7 × 10 plus 7 × 3, which is 70 + 21 = 91.

    SumAnswer
    7 × 1391
    7 × 1498
    7 × 15105
    7 × 16112
    7 × 17119
    7 × 18126
    7 × 19133
    7 × 20140

    Common mistakes

    • Giving 7 × 8 as 54 or 58. It is 56.
    • Giving 7 × 6 as 36 or 48. It is 42, six sevens.
    • Writing 7 × 9 as 69. It is 63.

    A way to learn it

    Do 7 × 1 to 7 × 5, then 7 × 10, 11 and 12 from the other tables. Then 7 × 6 and 7 × 9. Last, learn 7 × 7 = 49 and 7 × 8 = 56. Use the quiz with Ask both ways round to meet each fact from both sides.

Next, try the 8 times table, or go back to the 6 times table. To see every table in one grid, use the times tables chart. To make your own cards, try the flashcard maker.
