AIFF to MP3, small enough to share.

AIFF is the Mac's own uncompressed sound format: GarageBand, Logic, Audacity and many sample packs save it. It is big, and Chrome, many websites and Windows players will not take it. Drop the AIFF here and get an MP3 about a fifth of the size or smaller, ready to send, upload or put under a video. Nothing is uploaded.

This runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

How it works

Read here, not in the browser's player.

01 / Read

Our own AIFF reader

Chrome and Firefox cannot play AIFF, so this page reads the file itself: 8, 16, 24 and 32-bit, and 32 or 64-bit float.

02 / Encode

MP3 at your quality

320 kbps is the most MP3 can hold and suits music. 128 kbps is plenty for speech.

03 / Size

Much smaller

A minute of CD-quality AIFF is about 10 MB. At 320 kbps the MP3 is about 2.4 MB, at 128 kbps about 1 MB.

Questions

Good to know.

Is my file uploaded?

No. It is read and converted in this tab, so your music never leaves your computer.

Which AIFF files work?

Plain AIFF and AIFF-C with uncompressed sound, in 8, 16, 24 or 32-bit, or 32 or 64-bit float, mono or stereo. AIFF-C files that are themselves compressed (rare, usually old phone or game sounds) are refused with a message.

How do I export an MP3 from GarageBand directly?

In GarageBand on a Mac, choose Share, then Export Song to Disk, and pick MP3. This page helps when you already have AIFF files, or someone sent you one.

Will the MP3 sound worse?

MP3 removes sound most people cannot hear. At 320 kbps very few listeners can tell it from the AIFF; keep the AIFF as your master copy anyway.

Can I get a WAV instead?

Yes, the audio converter takes AIFF too and saves WAV, MP3 or OGG.

Does it keep the song name and artist?

No. The MP3 holds the sound only; add the details in your music app afterwards.
