Each one counted
Left, right, the wheel click and the two side buttons. A button that does not light up is not reaching the computer.
Free tool
Click the pad with each button of your mouse. The button lights up on the drawing and its count goes up, the wheel shows each scroll, and a press that comes too soon after letting go is flagged, the usual sign of a mouse that double clicks by itself. Switch to the click speed test to count your clicks per second.

What it checks
01 / Buttons
Left, right, the wheel click and the two side buttons. A button that does not light up is not reaching the computer.
02 / Wheel
Each step of the wheel is counted. A wheel that jumps the wrong way shows as scrolls in both directions.
03 / Switch
A press within 30 milliseconds of letting go is faster than a finger can manage, so it is flagged as a likely worn switch.
Questions
The small switch under the button wears and its contacts bounce, so one press is read as two. Compressed air or a few hard clicks sometimes help for a while; the lasting fixes are a new switch or a new mouse. Check the system's double-click speed setting too, since a very slow setting can make two separate clicks act as one double click.
Some mice need their maker's app before side buttons send anything, and some apps map them to other actions. On a Mac, many mice need such an app for side buttons to work at all.
Yes. A click is a left click, a two-finger click is a right click, and two-finger scrolling counts as the wheel. A trackpad has no middle or side buttons.
It depends on how you click. Plain clicking with one finger is usually well under ten clicks per second; methods such as jitter or butterfly clicking go higher. Try the same length each time to compare fairly.
How long you held the last button down. If dragging drops things halfway, hold the button and watch: a release you did not make shows up as a short hold and a new click.
