White box meme maker.

Add a white box with a caption above or below a GIF or a picture, the way many memes and reaction posts are made. The box grows to fit your words, they wrap, and you can change the colours, the font, the size, the alignment and the padding. A GIF stays a GIF with the box on every frame. Nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.

The picture is read and the caption is drawn in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Guide

How to add a white caption box, step by step.

A white box meme is a picture or GIF with a plain box of text added above or below it. The box is white, the words are black and the picture sits untouched underneath. This white box meme maker builds that box for you. Type the caption, choose above or below, and the box grows to fit your words, which wrap on their own. It works on every frame of a GIF, so a GIF stays a GIF, and on a still picture, which saves as PNG, JPG or WebP. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.

How to add a white box caption

  1. Drop a GIF or a picture on the box, click to choose one, or paste one. The preview shows it with a sample caption selected, so you can type over it.
  2. Type your words in Caption. Press Return to start a new line yourself. Long lines wrap.
  3. Choose Above the picture or Below the picture under Box.
  4. Pick the Box colour and the Text colour. White and black are the defaults, and any pair works.
  5. Pick a Font, set the Text size, the Align side and the Padding.
  6. Under More settings, add a Line between box and picture, shrink the Width of the result, and for a still picture choose Save as.
  7. Click Download the GIF, or Download the picture. For a still, Copy the picture puts it on the clipboard.

How big the box is

Everything scales with the picture, so the caption looks the same on a small GIF and a big one. Text size is a share of the picture's width, from 2 to 14 percent. Padding is a share of the letter size. The box is as tall as its lines plus the padding, so it only takes the room the words need. Take a picture 480 px wide with Text size 6 percent and Padding 60 percent, and a caption on two lines.

PartSumResult
Letter size480 × 6 percent = 28.829 px
Padding at the sides29 × 60 percent = 17.417 px
Padding top and bottom17 × 0.8 = 13.614 px
Line height29 × 1.22 = 35.435 px
Box height, two lines2 × 35 + 2 × 1498 px

The result is the picture's height plus 98 px, and the same width. The summary above the download gives the exact size and the height of the box.

Fonts

The fonts are the ones this site already carries, so the text looks the same on every device and in the saved file. Montserrat extra bold is the default, a heavy sans that reads well in a small box. Inter, Poppins, Raleway and Space Grotesk are cleaner or lighter. Archivo Black, Anton and Bebas Neue are tall and heavy, and Bebas Neue is capitals only. Playfair Display is a serif for a quote.

GIFs and stills

  • On a GIF the same box is drawn on every frame. The frame times and the loop setting are kept. The box does not change from frame to frame, so it adds little to the file.
  • A GIF with see-through parts keeps them. Only the box is solid.
  • Under Width of the result, an option such as At most 480 px makes the result smaller. A picture is never made larger than it is.
  • A still picture is saved at its own size, or smaller. JPG has no see-through, so any clear part turns white.
  • An animated WebP or animated PNG counts as a still: only its first frame is read. Turn an animated WebP into a GIF with WebP to GIF first.

Common problems

  • The words are too small: raise Text size. The box grows with it.
  • The words touch the edge: raise Padding.
  • A very long word does not fit: it is broken between letters so it stays inside the box.
  • The GIF is too big: choose a smaller width, then run it through the GIF compressor.

Want the words on the picture itself, in the classic top and bottom style? Use add text to a GIF for a GIF, or the meme generator for a picture. To trim away part of the picture first, use crop GIF.

Questions

Good to know.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The picture is read and the caption is drawn in this tab, so it never leaves your computer.

What is a white box meme?

A picture or GIF with a plain box of text above or below it, usually white with black words. The box holds the caption, so the picture stays clear.

Does it work on GIFs?

Yes. The same box is drawn on every frame, and the frame times and loop setting are kept. The result is a GIF.

Can I use a colour other than white?

Yes. Box colour and Text colour take any colours.

Can I put the box below the picture?

Yes. Choose Below the picture under Box.

Does the text wrap?

Yes. Words move to the next line when they do not fit, and the box grows to hold them. A word wider than the box is broken between letters.

Which fonts can I use?

Montserrat, Inter, Poppins, Raleway, Space Grotesk, Archivo Black, Anton, Bebas Neue and Playfair Display. They are the fonts this site carries, so they look the same on every device.

Can I save a still picture as PNG or JPG?

Yes. For a still picture, Save as offers PNG, JPG or WebP. JPG turns any see-through part white.

Can it handle an animated WebP or APNG?

Only as a still: the first frame is used. Turn an animated WebP into a GIF first, then drop the GIF here.

Is there a watermark or a limit?

No watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it.
