Free tool

PDF to Word, text you can edit.

Get the words out of a PDF and into a .docx you can edit in Word, Pages or Google Docs: paragraphs, headings, bold and italic, pictures, and scanned pages read with OCR. Or keep the exact look with each page as a picture. It runs in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded. No sign-up, no watermark.

Questions

Good to know.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is read and the Word file is written in this tab, so it never leaves your computer. That matters for contracts, statements and anything private.

What comes across?

The text in reading order, split into paragraphs, with headings, bold and italic, the font and size, centred and justified paragraphs, indents and the pictures at their place. Two-column pages are read left column first.

What does not?

A PDF stores where each word sits, not the document it came from, so some things have to be guessed. Tables come out as text with tabs between the cells, text boxes and side notes join the main text, and colours, underlines and links are not kept. For a copy that looks exactly like the PDF, pick Exact look; for the original layout, ask whoever made the PDF for the Word file.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

Yes. A page with no text in it is read with OCR (Tesseract) in the language you pick. Clear, straight scans read best; check names and numbers afterwards. The text reader (about 4 MB) and the language (1 to 3 MB) load the first time.

Will it open in Google Docs and Pages?

Yes. It is a standard .docx. In Google Docs, upload it to Drive and open it with Google Docs.

Does it work with a password-protected PDF?

A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be read here. Open it, save a copy without the password, then convert that copy.
