The best Mac screen recording apps, by job

There is no single best app, because a tutorial, a product demo and a meeting copy need different things. Pick by the job, then check the dated prices and free limits below.

Short answer: match the app to the job.

  • Tutorials and courses: an app with a real editor. MotionShine (free) or Camtasia (paid) fit here.
  • Product demos: an app that zooms and smooths the cursor for you. MotionShine, Screen Studio and Cap do this.
  • Meetings and calls: Zoom's own recorder, or any app that records your Mac's sound.
  • Quick video messages with a link: Loom, Tella or Cap.
  • One quick clip: the Mac's own recorder, Shift-Command-5. It is free and already installed.

Prices and free limits come from each maker's own page, checked on 24 October 2026, in US dollars before tax. If a page does not say something, this guide says "not found". We make MotionShine, so weigh what we say about it the way you would weigh any maker's page about its own product.

This guide is a different cut from our full comparison of 20 Mac screen recorders. That one compares every app on the same columns. This one starts from what you are making and leaves out the rest.

Tutorials and courses

A tutorial is long, it has a voice over, and viewers often watch it twice. That sets three needs.

  1. An editor with text, pictures and music lanes. Tutorials need step titles, a logo, and a quiet music bed under your voice. A trim-only editor stops being enough after your second video.
  2. No time limit. Many tutorials run past 5 minutes, so a plan that caps recordings at 5 minutes, like Loom's free Starter, is the wrong fit.
  3. A price that survives a course. If you make 50 lessons, a yearly bill matters more than a launch discount.

Picks for tutorials

MotionShine is free with no time limit and no watermark, and its editor has text, pictures, music lanes, voice over and captions made on your Mac. Free exports stop at 720p at 30 fps. For a tutorial watched on a laptop, that is often fine. For a course you sell, Pro unlocks 1080p, 1440p, 4K and 60 fps with a one-time price.

Camtasia is the long-standing tutorial tool. Its store page lists four yearly plans: Starter $39, Essentials $179.88, Create $249 and Pro $599. The page says Starter's editor exports are watermarked and the other three are not. There is no monthly price on that page. It is the choice when you need the deepest editor and your team already knows it.

ScreenFlow is a paid-once timeline editor. Its store page lists $199 for the app, and $275 for the Super Pak with a stock media library. It is a good fit if you want a one-time price and do not mind a bigger app.

Keep Camtasia or ScreenFlow if

You edit long, multi-track videos every week, you rely on their stock libraries or templates, or your team has years of projects in them. Moving costs more than a free app saves.

For the editing side, see how to edit a screen recording on Mac and video editing tips for screen recordings. To plan the video before you record, use the tutorial video script template.

Product demos

A demo is short and has one job: show a product so someone understands it quickly. The cursor and the zoom matter more than anything else, because viewers watch on a small screen and cannot see a tiny pointer on a big display.

What to look for:

  • Zoom that follows your clicks. Without it, you edit zooms by hand.
  • A smooth cursor and click effects, so the pointer is easy to follow.
  • A clean export, with no watermark.
  • Quality that matches where it plays. A landing page hero needs 1080p or better. A Slack post does not.

Picks for product demos

MotionShine zooms on every click automatically, smooths the cursor, and lets you add click effects and motion blur. The free version has all of that, with exports up to 720p. Pro adds higher resolutions. Hosted share links are not part of it, so you send the file or upload it yourself.

Screen Studio is the best-known app of this kind. Its page lists automatic and manual zooms, smoothed cursor paths, click effects, motion blur, backgrounds and shadows, captions, and export up to 4K at 60 fps. Share links are 1080p at 60 fps for videos up to 30 minutes. It is $9 a month billed yearly or $29 monthly, and its page mentions no free trial or free export. Compare the two in the Screen Studio alternatives guide and Screen Studio pricing.

Cap is open source, with free local recording for personal use and no time limit, per its pricing page. Commercial use needs the Desktop licence, $29 a year or $58 once. Share links are capped at 5 minutes each.

Keep Screen Studio if

You like its look, you want share links that play in a browser, and you are fine with a monthly or yearly price. MotionShine has no share links, so if the link is the point, it is not the better pick. If you only need the file, you do not need to pay for the link.

Meetings and calls

A meeting recording has one hard problem: sound. On a Mac, the other people's voices are your Mac's own sound, not your microphone. Apple's recorder has an "Include System Audio" option only in macOS 27 Golden Gate or later, per Apple Support. On earlier macOS, a built-in recording of a call has your voice and nothing from the others.

For Zoom specifically, start with Zoom's own Record button. Computer recording is free on every account and cloud recording needs a paid plan, per Zoom's help pages. See the best Zoom recording software for Mac and how to record a Zoom meeting on Mac.

Use a separate screen recorder when you want a copy of your own walkthrough, not a copy of the call. Then the picks are the same as for demos, as long as the app captures your Mac's sound. How to screen record on Mac with audio explains each way. And tell people before you record. A separate app does not show anyone a notice, and the rules differ by place and workplace.

Quick video messages

Sometimes you do not want a video file. You want to hit stop and paste a link into Slack. That is a different product.

Loom's pricing page lists a free Starter plan with 25 videos, 5 minutes per recording and 720p. Business is $18 per user a month and adds unlimited recording length and videos, up to 4K, trimming and stitching, and uploads and downloads. The page lists a 14-day trial for Business + AI. More in Loom pricing, is Loom free and Loom alternatives.

Tella's page lists Pro at $13 and Premium at $19 per user a month, billed yearly. It lists no free plan. Pro includes 3,000 credits a month and 4K export; Premium adds 60 fps export, removal of Tella branding and custom domains. Recording length is 6 hours per clip on paid plans.

Cap gives free share links up to 5 minutes each. Its Pro plan, $12 per user a month, adds unlimited cloud storage and sharing.

Keep Loom if

Your team already lives in it, you send many short messages a week, and viewing stats matter to you. A link that works in two clicks is worth a lot, and a local-file app will not give it to you.

Screenshots plus short clips

Some people take twenty screenshots for every recording. In that case, the screenshot app matters more.

CleanShot X's page lists Basic at $35 once, with one year of updates and then an optional $19 a year, and Pro at $10 per user a month billed yearly. There is no trial, but a 30-day money-back guarantee. Snagit's page lists $39 per user a year.

If you only take screenshots on a Mac, the free shortcuts may already be enough. See Mac screenshot shortcuts.

Keep CleanShot X or Snagit if

Screenshots, arrows and annotations are most of your work, and video is an add-on. A dedicated recorder would only add a second app.

The free built-in recorder: when it is enough

Apple's Support page says Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot toolbar. You can record the entire screen, a selected window (macOS Tahoe 26 or later) or a selected portion. Options include a microphone, mouse-click highlighting and a timer. Stop with the menu bar button or Command-Control-Esc. QuickTime Player, File, New Screen Recording, does a similar job.

It is enough for one quick clip you will trim and send. It does not zoom, and its system audio option needs macOS 27. See how to screen record on Mac and QuickTime screen recording with audio.

A quick way to choose

  1. Is it one clip for one person? Use the Mac's own recorder.
  2. Will it be watched by many people, on a page or channel? You need polish: zoom, cursor, a clean export. Start with MotionShine, Screen Studio or Cap.
  3. Is it longer than 10 minutes with a voice over? You need an editor with lanes. MotionShine or Camtasia.
  4. Do you need a link, not a file? Loom, Tella or Cap.
  5. Does it include a call? Make sure the app captures your Mac's sound.
